MCAS Assembly “Planning for Success”

Do you remember why you take the MCAS?  A) Measure what you should know as a result of your education  B) Measure how well we have taught you what you should know  C) Use results to help us improve as a school

What is a Standard?  A) The skills and knowledge you should have at a specific grade level  B) Objectives of what you should know as a result of your education

Grade Level Math Review Qs Directions 1) No blurting 2) Correct answer 3) Small prizes at the end for correct answers.

Planning for Success Tips from your math teachers- Multiple Choice:  Take your time!  Read the whole question  Do the question 1 st then check for the answer. The easy or wrong answers are always a choice, don’t be fooled.  Process of elimination, can you throw 2 out?  Use the time you have to check your work, then recheck it, then check it again...

Planning for Success Tips from your math teachers cont.-  Label your work. Ex: 3cm 4cm Area = 12cm²

Planning for Success Tips from your math teachers cont.- Open Response/Short Answers:  Show and explain all work for all 5 questions  There is more than 1 part, answer each part, you will be able to do it!  Write the formulas you use  Label parts (A, B, C, etc.)

Planning for Success Tips from your “non-math” teachers-  Use the formula reference sheet you are provided  Read all of the answers before you solve them  Re-read the problem after you solved it to see if your answer is reasonable  Your ELA strategies still work outside of your ELA classroom… mark up your text with your thoughts, background knowledge, connections, visuals, & key words are helpful

Bad News (the same deal as ELA Test) No cell phones or any electronic devices

It’s true… Facebook, texting, You Tube, & Twitter do not help you do better on MCAS

Remember…  Your teachers have prepared you for this  Take pride in your work. Your work is a reflection of you and the entire school.  “If you think you can or think you can’t, you are right!”
