ENERGY The ability to do work or cause change

A form of energy that can travel through space and can be seen by the human eye; can also be collected and used (solar) LIGHT ENERGY

Uses of Light Energy use natural light to see. Amplified light can be used in lasers which can transmit enough energy to cut materials including metal Sun allows us to see and helps plants grow Lighthouses, Computers, Cameras, Televisions, Strobes, Traffic lights, Light bulbs, etc.

A form of energy that is closely related to temperature and can be felt as warmth (similar to heat) THERMAL ENERGY

Thermal Energy The internal motion of the atoms is called thermal energy, because moving particles produce heat. Thermal energy can be produced by friction. (rubbing your hands together is an example) Thermal energy causes changes in temperature and phase of any form of matter. (causes melting, etc.)

THERMAL ENERGY USES to keep warm (by heating structures and vehicles) To prepare food (both at home and commercially), to make zillions of products (manufacturing and industrial applications) such as melting plastic Thermal energy from the sun supports life on this planet.

A form of energy made available by a flow of electric charge through a conductor (electricity) ELECTRICAL ENERGY

stored in a battery used to power a cell phone or start a car Lightning is an example of electrical energy in nature, so powerful that it is not confined to a wire. Uses of Electrical Energy

Energy of a machine of moving object Think: Motion, Moving MECHANICAL ENERGY

Example of Mechanical Energy The bowling ball has mechanical energy. When the ball strikes the pins, mechanical energy is transferred to the pins! In other words, when the moving ball hits the pins, the pins move.

Examples of Mechanical Energy

Energy that we can hear produced from air vibrations. Sound must travel through a medium (substance). SOUND ENERGY

Uses of Sound Energy Music Sonar Ultrasounds

What is energy? Energy is defined as; the ability to do work or cause a change. Energy occurs in many forms and is used in our everyday lives. It can be observed in cycles, patterns, and systems. What would our world be like without energy? We would not be able to do work or cause change. What does energy look like? Energy takes many forms, such as; mechanical, light, electrical, sound, and thermal. How is each form of energy used? Energy is used to power our homes and cars. It is also used to power our bodies. Basically, it is used to do work! Why does energy in circuits require a complete path to flow? Without a complete path, electrical energy would not flow to power a light bulb or a doorbell. What are alternative energy sources? Alternative energy sources are solar, wind, and water. These forms of energy are cleaner forms that don’t produce a pollution byproduct. Energy can be neither created nor destroyed, just like matter, because matter and energy are the same!

QUIZ TIME! What type of energy is the spinning plate inside of a microwave oven? MECHANICAL ENERGY

QUIZ TIME! Electrical energy is transported to your house through power lines. When you plug an electric fan to a power outlet, electrical energy is transformed (changed) into what type of energy? MECHANICAL ENERGY

QUIZ TIME! What energy is shown? Answer: Light Also, thermal energy when bulb gets hot.

What types of energy are shown below? Mechanical and Thermal Energy (Don’t forget friction (rubbing between box and floor)

What types of energy are shown below? Electrical (TV electricity), Mechanical (pushing remote) and Light Energy (can see what is on TV)

What forms of energy does a campfire have? Answers: Thermal Energy (feel warm), Light Energy (can see)

List all energy types involved in the car below.
