A New Collaborative to Improve Broader Impacts Kevin Niemi, U. Wisconsin-Madison Kemi Jona, Northwestern U. Jane Horwitz, U. Penn This work is supported in part by the National Science Foundation under grants MCB , MCB , and IIA However, any opinions, findings, conclusions, and/or recommendations are those of the investigators and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Foundation.

What is Broader Impacts? The broader impacts (Bl) of research refers to the potential for the effort to benefit society and contribute to the achievement of desired societal outcomes. Follow

NSF Framing of BI Broader impacts may be accomplished through the research itself, through the activities that are directly related to specific research projects, or through activities that are supported by, but are complementary to, the project. NSF values the advancement of scientific knowledge and activities that contribute to achievement of societally relevant outcomes. Such outcomes include, but are not limited to: full participation of women, persons with disabilities, and underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); improved STEM education and educator development at any level ; increased public scientific literacy and public engagement with science and technology; improved well-being of individuals in society; development of a diverse, globally competitive STEM workforce; increased partnerships between academia, industry, and others ; improved national security; increased economic competitiveness of the United States; and enhanced infrastructure for research and education. Follow

Why NABI? More important than ever to increase understanding of the value of publicly-funded research More must be done to support both individual researchers and their institutions, particularly in higher education NABI was founded to support and enhance the work of broader impacts professionals NABI seeks to foster a community of practice that increases individual and institutional capacity for, and engagement in, Bl activities. Follow

NABI Objectives Identify and curate promising models, practices, and evaluation methods for the BI community Expand engagement in and support the development of high-quality BI activities by educating current and future faculty and researchers on effective BI practices Develop human resources necessary for sustained growth and increased diversity of the BI community Promote cross-institutional collaboration on and dissemination of BI programs, practices, models, materials, and resources Promote broad dissemination of BI programs, practices, models, and resources and catalyze cross institutional collaborations Follow

Why Join NABI? Contribute your voice to the national dialogue around broader impacts and research Access Bl resources developed and recommended by NABI colleagues Share promising practices to grow both new and established Bl offices Identify collaborators nationwide to strengthen broader impacts plans for your NSF grant proposals Participate in national and regional meetings and workshops to network with peers and build your Bl skills Follow
