Verizon Thinkfinity & Common Core Standards Aligned with college and work expectations Focused and coherent Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards Benchmarked internationally so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society Based on evidence and research State led – coordinated by NGA Center and CCSSO Characteristics of the Common Core Standards

Thinkfinity & Common Core Every state has its own set of academic standards, resulting in a situation where public education students in each state may be learning different content and at varying levels of achievement. All students must be prepared to compete not only with their American peers but also with students from around the world. Why are Common Core Standards Important?

Thinkfinity & Common Core Thinkfinity’s Content Partners have created a variety of materials aligned to the national and state Common Core Standards for Mathematics and Language Arts and have made them easy to find using our State Standards Search Engine located on the Verizon Thinkfinity Home page and Resources page.State Standards Search Engine How Can Verizon Thinkfinity Help?

Thinkfinity & Common Core Start by finding your state’s Common Core Standards from the drop-down menu. Scroll down through the initial state listings and look for a second set that is designated as the Common Core Standards. Double-click on the state of your choice. How Can Verizon Thinkfinity Help?

Thinkfinity & Common Core Then choose your grade level and either the Mathematics or the Language Arts standards to search. How Can Verizon Thinkfinity Help?

Thinkfinity & Common Core The results will include: A description of the search The number and a description of the standard The number of aligned results How Can Verizon Thinkfinity Help?

Thinkfinity & Common Core The Common Core Standards for Mathematics address math skills and knowledge as well as the application of mathematics processes in authentic problem-solving situations. Mathematics

Thinkfinity & Common Core A fifth grade teacher wants to help students “Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions….” [CC5.NF.2] using a lesson entitled A Brownie Bake. This requires students to apply measurement skills to determine the correct amount of each ingredient and also assesses their understanding of fractions as they decide how to divide and share the brownies with their classmates.A Brownie Bake Mathematics – Example #1

Thinkfinity & Common Core To help 8 th Graders “Use the equation of a linear model to solve problems…” [CC.SP.8], teachers could select the Line of Best Fit interactive that allows students to plot a set of data on a coordinate grid and determine the equation for the line of best fit. Line of Best Fit Mathematics – Example #2

Thinkfinity & Common Core The Common Core Standards for Language Arts require students to read, write, speak, and listen across the content areas using challenging and complex materials in preparation for success in college and careers in their chosen fields. Language Arts

Thinkfinity & Common Core A third grade teacher interested in helping students improve their ability to read and comprehend information texts wants students to “determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.” [RI3.2] The teacher might select Brass Instruments and Pitch, a lesson plan that provides factual information and vocabulary development about a non- fiction topic. Brass Instruments and Pitch Language Arts – Example #1

Thinkfinity & Common Core To provide research skills practice for 8 th grade students, select the Common Core Standard that asks students to demonstrate their ability to “conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources…” [W8.7]. In the lesson A Debate Against Slavery, students must gather evidence from primary source materials and use that information to develop an argument against slavery.A Debate Against Slavery Language Arts – Example #2
