INTRO TO ASL Grammar ASL 1

What is asl gloss?  There is no written form of ASL  A Deaf person signs in ASL but writes in English  Glossing was created by hearing teachers and researchers  It is a written way to show the sentence structure of ASL  It is a tool to help learn the correct order to sign things in.

TOSV  T- Time (if you have a time or day)  O-object  S-Subject  V-Verb  Question words-who, what, why, where, how go at the end of the sentence

TIME any word that would indicate when something happened. Ex: 12:00, morning, winter, long time ago, yesterday, every day.

OBJECT this is the word the action is directed to. Ex: I’m going to school. School is where the verb is taking you.

SUBJECT – this is the person or thing doing the action. Ex: Yesterday I went to the movies. I am the person doing the action

VERB This is the action in the sentence. Ex: The fox jumped up high. The fox is doing the action.

-“WH” Question signs always go at the end of a sentence! Movies you go to, where?

ASL flows from general to specific. I go to a really run down gym! Would become – gym I go to, Run down!

-adjectives come after the object is mentioned! Girl pretty, hair long. House, 2 story, run down, haunted
