Midterm Review WEB DESIGN

FLASH What is Flash? –Flash is a multimedia graphics program specifically for use on the web –Flash enables you to create interactive “movies” on the web for example, an individual is capable of interacting with the computer through computer games which are heavily embedded with Flash components.

Flash! Flash uses the ‘shockwave’ plug-in –A free download on Adobe’s website Flash does not require programming skills! Flash uses ‘vector graphics’ Which means that graphics can be scaled to any size Which means that graphics will not lose clarity/quality

Who’s Flashing? As of September 2000, through a study conducted by NPD Research, a company which provides services, such as industry tracking, data collection and analysis, conducted a study to determine what percentage of web browsers have Flash preinstalled! The results show 96.4% in year 2000, most recent information by NPD as of April 2006 shows an increase to 97.7 %

Why Flash ? It is a well-known fact that every successful business is a result of effective advertising and marketing strategies. Flash sites are attractive Flash offers robust capabilities such as animation & user interactivity e.g. zappos.com Within a 30 second period Flash can show a whole company presentation or profile on a website.

Why Flash …contd Flash has now become a very well-recognized format on the internet, and it is estimated that over 90% of web users now have the Flash Player installed on their computers. In addition to being embedded within a web page, Flash movies can also be exported. Flash movies can be stored in very small file sizes, so they can be downloaded rapidly. It is now possible to import external information from a database into a Flash movie. Flash can also be used to create innovative advertisements, games and movies that can be displayed a web site.

Why NOT Flash? 1.Too Much Time – takes too long to download. 2.Annoying Intro – For business purposes most consumers are turned of by long intro’s. 3.Not much Content – too little content, too much animation may mean lack of information for clients. 4.Most search engines don’t like Flash – Html codes are easily accessible by websites. 5.Some users don’t have the necessary plug-in to view flash. 6.Flash websites are costly! 7.Flash is risky-sometimes requires downloads, a high risk for computer vulnerability!

HTML? What is HTML? HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is the set of markup symbols or codes inserted in a file intended for display on a World Wide Web browser

FLASH vs. HTML FLASH 86% of websites on the internet are flash based or have a flash component HTML Although all websites are primarily HTML based only approximately 14% of websites have no flash or flash components.

HTML Effectiveness? User friendliness More organized-no need to download a plug-in before browsing More consistent-generally speaking most HTML sites are always up an running Designing a html site is easier HTML sites typically provide more content Accessibility- html sit are easily accessible
