Functional Question Higher (Statistics 8) For the week beginning ….

A coffee machine dispenses 130 millilitres of black coffee into cups with a capacity of 175 millilitres. These values are accurate to 3 significant figures. Milk is supplied in small cartons which contain 21 millilitres, accurate to the nearest millilitre. Beryl likes milky coffee and always puts 2 cartons of milk in her coffee. Will Beryl’s cup ever overflow? You must show your working. (Total 5 marks)

Coffee < ≤ cup (20.5 ≤) milk < 21.5 All three inequalities correct B2 One correct B1 B2 - Marks awarded independent of method Their min cup – their max coffee –2 × their max milk – ( × 21.5) (= 1) M1 – Method mark No as 1 ml to spare Must show all stages and reach conclusion A1 - Accuracy marks are awarded when following on from a correct method Logical argument (ft their inequalities) with M1 awarded Strand (ii) Q1 – Quality of written answer [5]
