 UNDERSTANDING AND READING WORD PROBLEMS Do Now’s for Lessons 1-8

Lesson 1  I went to the store and bought a gallon of milk and three oranges. The gallon of milk cost $0.87. If I spent $2.97 total at the store, how much did each orange cost?

Lesson 1  A bus is carrying a certain number of passengers. At the first stop, one third of the passengers exit the bus. At the second stop, only one eighth of the passengers stay on the bus. At the third stop, passengers enter and the number of people on the bus doubles. At the final stop, all 8 people exit. How many passengers were originally on the bus?  Write an equation to represent this scenario.

Lesson 2  I have 7 quarters, 15 pennies, and 20 dimes. I exchange these coins for nickels.  Draw a diagram that represents the coins you have and the amount of money you have.  Write an equation using the variables Q, P, D, and N, with N representing the number of nickels you would receive for trading in Q number of quarters, P number of pennies, and D number of dimes.  Now, plug in the values of the problem, and solve the problem.

Lesson 2  Anita buys sweaters at $20 per sweater plus Amazon’s $15 shipping and handling fee. If she has $90, how many sweaters can she buy?

Lesson 2  b) Josephine can buy sweaters in Montbello at $20 each. She can buy them in Castle Rock for $18 each, but she’ll need to spend $30 on gas. How many sweaters would she need to buy to make it worth the cost?

Sydney and Grace each wanted Ugg boots, which cost $ I bought my brother Sam some measuring cups for his kitchen. They were cheap, only $7.87 total. Because those boots were way too expensive, I bought Sydney and Grace each Hollister gift cards with $25 on them. How much more money did I spend on Emily than I spent on Sam?  Underline the question!  Now Solve!

Lesson 4  A “baker’s dozen” is 13 (bakeries often throw in an extra when you order a dozen). I bought a dozen donuts at Asenath’s Bakery, which kindly gave me 13 donuts. At Heaven-Leigh’s Bakery, they stiffed me and only gave me 12. Asenath charged me $2.89 total. Heaven-Leigh charged $2.69 total. Which bakery had the better price per donut?

Lesson 4  My dog weighs 31 kilograms (about 70 pounds!). What is his weight in milligrams?
