Effects of Tourism on the Natural Environment  West Coast trail is World renowned:  sandstone cliffs  caves  sea arches  gorgeous waterfalls along beaches

Effects of Tourism on the Natural Environment Advantages from The West Coast Trail  9000 people a year go to hike  multiple spin-offs for the communities that surround the Trail  In a recent survey, about 90% of people in the local communities said the trail was a positive benefit for them  $ dollars in economic benefits  Park System benefits because the land remains protected

Effects of Tourism on the Natural Environment Neg. Impacts of the West Coast Trail  Overpopulation:  reservation system and Fees $108, $25 and $30  Pollution:  Sewage and gum  Cougars and other wild Animals  3-4 Cougar attacks annually, less likely to flee  Logging

Effects of Tourism on the Natural Environment Solutions  Trail Etiquette: Low Impact Camping  It is an offence to collect, remove, destroy or deface any heritage resource  Use a stove to minimize fires  Reduce risk of forest fires/use of wood  Ensure safe water and health conditions  If you are stuck, dig a hole 20cm deep x 30 meters away from water sources, "treasure chests"  Wash in the ocean or at the mouth of rivers  use biodegradable soap  Camp at designated campsites  Camp on the beach to reduce impact on the forest

Effects of Tourism on the Natural Environment Solutions  Hang your food, garbage and toiletries  Your actions can kill wildlife and endanger hikers  Pack it in: pack it out  There are no garbage cans on the WCT  Stay on the main trail and obey all signs  First Nation Reserves located along the WCT  Respect other visitors and the Trail  protect the quality of their experience
