Andrew Lloyd Webber-King of the Trunk Song

Objectives Students will understand the biography of a modern day music theatre composer Students will take notes on his biography Students will view examples of how ALW is the King of the Trunk Song Receive an assignment involving ALW

Andrew Lloyd Webber-The Early Years Andrew was born on March 22, 1948 in Kensington London, England. His Parents were both musicians. His mom was a violinist and pianist, and his father was a composer. It was always his destiny to become a musician In order to prove that he was destined to be a brilliant musician, he began composing at age 6 and had his first piece published at age 9.

School Life Andrew always loved composing and writing music. When he was in “Prep School”, he met his long time friend and lyricist, Tim Rice. Tim Rice went on to become extremely famous writing the lyrics for such musicals and movies like: Disney’s The Lion King. When they were both in 6 th grade, the two of them wrote a very short musical about the Bible Story of Joseph and his brothers. They called it: “Joseph and his Amazing Dreamcoat”

School Life Cont. This became an instant success that followed them for the rest of their career. Because of this, the Queen of England bestowed upon them a scholarship to attend the Westminster School at Oxford, to study history. They both abandoned this idea and moved onto the Royal College of Music to pursue their musical career.

New Genre While in college, the two of them ended up inventing a new genre of Music Theatre, called a Rock Opera. What is a Rock Opera? What do you think?

Rock Opera Is an entire musical that is sung, BUT the music is based on the style of Rock ‘n’ Roll Music. Example: WQT1_8E WQT1_8E

King of the Trunk Song Since his graduation, he produced 3 main Rock Opera’s: Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. These and many more have been huge successes, because Webber knows what kind of music a large group of people like, and gives them what they want. Webbers main criticism is that all of his music sounds the same, which is true to a point. Because of this, he has earned the title of King of the Trunk Song. What is a Trunk Song

Types of Songs A Trunk Song: ◦ A Trunk Song is a song written for one Musical, cut out from it, then used in a different musical. Sometimes it’s just a small theme, sometimes it’s a whole song. ◦ Andrew Lloyd Webber uses this type of song all the time Examples: ◦ ◦ ◦

Webber’s Legacy Not only does he have a ton of musicals to his name, but 2 of his shows are in the Top 5 List of Broadway’s Longest Running Shows: “Cats” is #3 on the list and it ran for almost 18 years “The Phantom of the Opera” is #1 and is still running on Broadway 25 years since it opened in 1986.

Webber’s Legacy Cont. Because of his, and Tim Rice’s, contribution to the musical world, they were knighted. 2 years ago, he was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, but it was caught early enough that he has been cured of it. He is still alive and writing music for both stage and screen.

Webber’s Works Webber has written such musicals as: ◦ Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. ◦ Evita ◦ Cats ◦ Jesus Christ Superstar ◦ By Jeeves ◦ Requiem ◦ The Phantom of the Opera ◦ Sunset Boulevard ◦ Aspects of Love ◦ Song and Dance, starring his younger brother Julian ◦ Star Light Express (performed only in Vegas) and completely on Roller Skates ◦ Love Never Dies-Sequel to Phantom…big Flop
