A Diamond In The Rough Allie Thomsen Period 4

Artistic Statement When working on my body of work, I explored new places and focused on the “diamonds in the rough.” People in general, constantly work to prefect things, it’s important to appreciate things as they are, to tear off the filthy exterior or worn down areas, and revert to the purity and simplicity of natural forms, because after all not everything needs perfecting. A diamond to one person can easily be considered trash to another. I chose to center my body of work in areas rich in cultural street life and areas that encompassed a wide variety of different urban architectural landscapes. I focused on vivid, timeless images that are not found in the nicest of places, but are still purely simple and crisp. I hope to persuade viewers to appreciate things individually, and not focus solely on the exterior, but see the beauty of the real gems that illuminate the streets and cities.

Biography As a photographer, I am instantly drawn to color, texture, vibrant culture, appealing shapes, unique urban landscapes, and people in general. I am also interested in street life and abstract mechanisms. Photography is a way for me to slap all of my ideas down onto one single surface that can be interoperated as one. I strive to capture images that will make people look twice, as well as think twice. The majority of my pictures are taken in areas that are almost, if not the complete opposite of the area that I live in. I am interested in possibly going to an art school, where I can improve as an artist in all areas, and hopefully have the opportunity to travel and expose myself to completely different areas of the world. I might also want to join the Peace Corps sometime in my life to open my eyes to different cultures and ways of life, and later in life maybe center some of my work on world awareness and current events. As an artist, I am always open to new experiences, new techniques, and hope to improve in all aspects.
