Objectives of the Gender working group Identify opportunities for cross learning and experience sharing among organisations (incl. gender mainstreaming tools and materials, gender in value chain studies, etc)  Organize learning and experience sharing forums regularly Work closely with Agri-Hub Ethiopia in designing learning agendas  Through Training, Training of Trainers, coaching services Document and share lessons

Identified learning needs One of the main challenges identified during the gender in value chains workshop organized by Agri-Hub in 2012 was to incorporate gender equality issues in value chain development. Online Survey among members:  How to mainstream gender in projects including Value Chain development  How to apply tools on gender and value chain  How to hold stakeholders accountable in addressing gender equity in value chain development  Share experiences from others who has done it

Gender in Value Chain coaching Agri-Hub started a coaching track in the second half of 2012, with the objective to provide practical on-the-job help to organisations working on value chain. While evaluating the 2012 coaching track with a number of Agri-Hub members and gender experts, the Agri-Hub also discussed the interest of a new, differently designed support track. The final problem mentioned for some organisations was the new rule for NGO’s, which states that only 30% of the money can be spent on admin. Based on the lesson learnt during the first support track, the second coaching track was designed and being implemented

2 nd Gender in VC Coaching Launched in August 2013 Objective:  To enable development practitioners to facilitate gender responsive value chain development.  As a result of this, it is to ensure that both male and female entrepreneurs benefit equally from better functioning of agricultural value chains. The expected results of the support track include;  Increased understanding about gender in agricultural value chains  Better understanding and application of existing tools and methodologies on gender and value chains  Documenting best practices in addressing gender equity in value chain development facilitation

2 nd Gender in VC Coaching Program of support track:  Training, coaching and experience sharing.  Documenting lessons learned (including Amharic publication with the case experiences, results and lessons learned concerning tools) Coaches:  Angelica Senders from F&S Advisory Services in the Netherlands  Two national coaches responsible for the coaching, the experience sharing event, final workshop and the publication.

2 nd Gender in VC Coaching Budget and contribution International activities - APF, ICCO and HIVOS contribute to the international part of the support track National activities: budget is Euro. Agri-Hub covers the costs for events, locations, publication and coordination. SNV Ethiopia contributes to the coaching track by providing a coach and covering all costs for their own participating staff and for partner organizations. The contribution SNV Ethiopia makes will be doubled by Agri-ProFocus. In this way the other coach can be financed. Contribution for the 20 participants is 500 USD.

Expected Coaching Objectives by participating Organizations How to improve our strategies, learn about other approaches and strategies implemented by other organizations Build capacities of our partners in gender mainstreaming, Adequate procedures and strategies put in place within the organization ensuring mainstreaming of gender in the development initiatives/projects Enhancing knowledge and capacities of partners and stakeholders to mainstream gender and addressing gender inequalities in value chains. Experience sharing, and networking with peer groups, and other actors towards gender mainstreaming particularly in the apiculture value chain.

The way forward: Plans in 2014 Regular meeting/update  quarterly small - working group meeting  Biannual bigger working group meeting  Work closely with other working groups Facilitate learning among network and group members  Organize learning events  Strengthen gender in value chains coaching support  Document and share learning via AHE – website Membership  Lobby for active participation and representation by member organizations  Increase membership
