Introduction How do people recognize objects presented in pictorial form? The ERP technique has been shown to be extremely useful in studies where the timing of multiple neural/perceptual mechanisms are of interest. Object recognition has high temporal demands (typically occurs in < 1 sec). N300 and N400, have been shown to be larger when prime and target pictures are unrelated than when they are related (McPherson & Holcomb, 1999) The N400, which has been reported in both word and picture studies, is thought to reflect amodal differences in the semantic processes activated by the primed and unprimed targets (McPherson & Holcomb, 1999) The N300, which has only been reported in picture priming studies (e.g., Barrett & Rugg, 1990; McPherson & Holcomb, 1999) has been suggested to reflect object specific perceptual processing. Problem: in standard priming techniques used in ERP picture studies so far, the participants are consciously aware of the prime and can use strategies that may interfere with observing the phenomenon of interest Solution: masked-priming, “covering” the prime and making participants unaware of what they have seen. Masked-primed words produced an attenuation of the N400 to target words following repeated compared to unrepeated words (Misra & Holcomb, 2003). By following the masked prime with a fully visible target picture it can be determined if the covert processing of the prime had any influence on the target. Hypotheses: 1. Similar repetition effects will be seen with masked pictures as have been seen with masked words (i.e., an N400 effect). 2. If the picture specific N300 reflects a relatively low level perceptual mechanism it too should reveal masked priming effects. Methods Masked Picture Priming – Semantic Categorization Task 16 participants (9 females, mean age = 20 years) Participants were presented pictures on a computer screen and instructed to respond when they detected food items. 170 trials per list 40 trials of repeated pictures (condition 1) 40 trials of different exemplar pairing (condition 2) 40 trials of unrelated pairings (condition 3) 50 trials of probe pairing (25 with food item in prime position 25 with food item in target position) 8 counterbalanced lists Primes were forward and backward masked with a pixelated image (Figure 1) Event-related potentials were recorded from 32 electrodes sites (see Figure 2) Discussion and Future Directions Late N400 effect similar to previously observed repetition effect in unmasked words and pictures – similar anterior distribution previously observed in picture priming studies. N300 does not seem to be sensitive to masked priming. Presence of a N400 without a N300 supports the view that the N400 and N300 are two separate components. Anterior/posterior differences observed in early window ( msec) probably reflect two different processes related to early feature analysis of the objects. Different exemplar late positivity effect – possibly semantic? Future Direction: Different SOAs, varying mask levels, more variations of conditions. There was a significant early negative effect ( msec; see Figure 3) between repeated and unrelated targets at anterior electrodes. In this same early time window ( msec) there was a significant positive effect in posterior electrode sites between repeated and unrelated targets. There was a significant later negative effect ( msec; Figure 3) between repeated and unrelated targets. There was a significant late positivity in the time window of msec in different exemplar versus unrelated comparison of targets (see Figure 4). Contact information:
