Assessment Creating a Narrative Poem

Write a narrative poem that recounts a fictional or true event dealing with the concept of choice. The poem must demonstrate your knowledge of narrative elements and poetic elements.

Prewriting Brainstorm ideas for a narrative poem about the concept of choice. These ideas may come from any of the following areas:  Your own life  A narrative that you have already written  Stories that you have heard about other people  Fictional stories you have read or watched  Myths and fairy tales

Drafting Once you have decided on a topic/idea, in small groups review the elements of narrative writing that you have learned: sequence of events, dialogue, details, characters, setting, description, etc. Create a plan incorporating these elements into a narrative poem. Write the first draft.

Caution! Do not overdo the poetic elements. Start slowly and use them only where they make a difference.

Group Revising  Identify places in your poem where you can refine the structure to enhance its ideas and style.  Review your Poetic Devices chart and consider revising the poem to enhance descriptions through poetic devices: metaphor, similes, imagery, symbols, or other devices with which you are comfortable.

Revision continued  Revise your poem to create appropriate line breaks and stanzas. Consider adding a refrain or a pattern of repeated words and phrases.  Consider using punctuation to support the meaning of the poem.  Consult the Scoring Guide to add further revisions.

Edit  Proofread your draft to identify mistakes in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.  Review your draft and select an appropriate title for your poem.  Prepare a publishable draft.
