WORD POWER – UNIT 2 Formal and Informal English

Today’s Agenda  Study the differences of Formal and Informal English.  Practice using Formal and Informal English.  Examine different countries and their languages.

Examples of Formality  Turn to page 26.  Read the introduction to formal and informal English. Discuss with a group these questions:  When would you want to use a formal language?  When would you want to use an informal language?

Practice Formality  Look at the letter at the bottom of page 26.  What are the different examples of formal and informal English listed in the chart?  Use each example in a sentence.  Use the chart above to correct the letter and to make it more formal.

Countries and Languages  Read the introduction to this topic on page 27.  What did you learn from it?  What is the UN?  What languages are popular in the world?
