Fun Facts About H 2 O Water is 800 times more dense than air 20% of global electricity is produced by hydropower More than 90% of all renewable energy is hydropower Water is the only thing on Earth that gets larger when it freezes (that’s why ice floats!) 70% of the human body is water

Water Power

The Big Picture Unit 1: Water Power ◦ 1.1 Hydro ◦ 1.2 Wave ◦ 1.3 Tidal Grand Coulee Dam, Columbia River, Washington

Essential Questions (pt 1) What is the water cycle? What drives the water cycle? How much water on Earth & where is it? How is flowing water an energy source?

Essential Questions (pt 2) How can work be done with water? What is hydropower & what’s the potential? What are the pros/cons of hydro power? How does hydropower affect the environment?

How much water is on Earth? 70% of Earth’s surface is covered by water 96% of all water on Earth is in the ocean Only 2% of all water is fresh water …but how much WATER is on Earth??? 326,000,000,000,000,000,000 gallons That much water would form a sphere about 860 miles in diameter!!! That’s 40% of the size of the moon!!!

How much water is on Earth? …so there’s a lot of water on Earth. What of it? Well, since a great deal of that water is in motion, we can use it to generate power. That’s what! Water Power!!!

Water Power vs. Hydropower Hydropower is often used to refer to all types of water power but in this class, we will use these definitions: Water Power - general term for all power generated from moving water which includes hydro, wave and tidal power Hydropower - energy generation derived from the kinetic energy of continuously flowing water

History of Hydropower BC AD Used by Greeks to turn waterwheels for grinding wheat French engineer Claude Bourdin coins the word, turbine Roman engineer Vitruvius credited with first written description of vertical water wheel 31 AD1700’s Chinese engineer Tu Shih invented a water- powered reciprocator for the casting of iron agricultural implements. Water power is being used extensively for grinding and pumping Lester Pelton obtains patent for Pelton wheel; 1 st industrial use of hydroelectric power in Michigan; Baltimore Polytechnic Institute was founded 1 st hydroelectric powerplant on Fox River in Appleton, Wisconsin % of all electricity produced globally comes from hydropower 1883
