Collating Data and the Data Presentation Plan IB Geography IA

What does it mean to collate? To systemize, to sort, to organize

Why are we collating our data? The purpose of collating data, is for teams to successfully compile their data in a simple, organized and manageable way.

How should we Collate our Data? In order to enable easy interpretation and analysis, collations will involve tabulating the data. So, start with the first question: – Example: What is your sex? ____Male ___ Female – Count all of your questionnaire responses and tabulate the number of each. – 1. What is your sex? _36___Male __14_ Female

Continue on for the rest of your Closed Questions. Example 1: – What is your view of abortion? Example 2: – How many times a month do you go to the grocery store? Strongly Agree AgreeNeutralDisagreeStrongly Disagree

Then you have to do your Open questions. This requires actually listing all the responses of the people surveyed. Example: Do you think we need to have a neighborhood watch to make things safer in our neighborhoods? Why or Why Not? – “Yes. I think we do because if the community makes safety a priority, the neighborhood is more likely to be more safe.” – No. I think the police do a good enough job, and we don’t need it. – Etc.

When will we meet with our groups to collate data? Monday: October 20 Tuesday: October 21

I’ve collated. Now what? After you have collated data successfully, the collated data needs to be typed up. Included in this is: – Closed Question Data – Open Question Data – All 6 Interview Transcripts This typed version will then be copied and given to each member of the group. 1 Copy will be turned into me for a grade on Wed. October 22. From here, you will divorce your group!

The Data Presentation Plan Now you will take your collated data, and read and annotate it. Look for patterns, trends, get a feel for how people think and behave. Based on what you see, the types of questions you asked, and the answers you got, you will have to plan how you will treat your data. See Data Presentation Plan Due Friday, October 24 th.
