 1) What were the political ideals brought to North America by the English?  2) What major documents limited the power of English monarchs?  3) How were the ideals of limited and representative government evident in our colonial government?

 True Monarchy until 1215  Magna Carta – document signed by King John that limited the power of monarchs (more power to nobles)  Rule of law – law that Monarchs must act according to the will of the people  Taxing, wrongful imprisonment amended  What did the English law begin to promote after the Magna Carta was signed? (Think chapter 2)

 Bicameral legislature – Parliament  Members represented the people and passed laws to limit rulers’ power  Petition of Right (1628)  Gave power to limit government to Parliament  Government could no longer:  Illegally imprison, force people to shelter soldiers,  English Bill of Rights  Established more rights for people and parliament  (no army without Parliamentary consent)

 Charters Power given by English government to its citizens that were colonizing America  Colonial Governments –  all were run by governors  Governors were advised by councils (land owners) and assemblies of elected representatives

 1) Royal – colony belonged directly to the crown (Virginia)  2) Proprietary – power to govern a colony is granted to an individual by the king (Maryland)  3) Corporate – Limited government control  Privately run  English still had military and trade control

 1) What were the political ideals brought to North America by the English?  2) What major documents limited the power of English monarchs?  3) How were the ideals of limited and representative government evident in our colonial government?

 Choose one of our 13 original colonies.  In 2 or 3 paragraphs summarize:  How that colony was founded  What type of colony it was (royal, proprietary, corporate)  How the colonial government was structured  How the government reflected the will of the crown and how it reflected the will of the people
