Social Studies Technology Project Based on the ODE SS Model

This presentation will give you a wide variety of web sites and activities that may be used in a 3rd grade social studies classroom. There will be activities given for each one of the six strands of the ODE social studies model. INTRODUCTION

Rationale n Expand student’s knowledge of the different strands of Ohio’s Social Studies n Broaden student’s awareness of the Internet n Provide an interactive and interesting atmosphere in the classroom dealing with Social Studies aspects n Give students opportunities to participate in activities involving the six strands of Social Studies

Goal To allow the students many opportunities to discover numerous aspects of Ohio’s Social Studies.

Third Grade Performance Objectives n Given a set time period and a narrative about the community,the learner will record changes that occurred n Given the population of the local community, the learner will describe cultural groups that live there n Given a map of the local community, the learner will locate physical and human features

Performance Objectives continued n Given a consumer decision, the learner will itemize the costs and benefits of alternative choices, including opportunity cost n Given an example of a local governmental activity, the learner will describe how the activity addresses a purpose or purposes of the government n The learner will work with others to govern a group activity, as evidenced in part by the capacity to: –A. help create rules –B. select leaders –C. follow directions and rules

At this site the students can go and find information on German American Heritage.

American Heritage Web Sites continued n At this site the students can travel out west and travel through the century.

American Heritage Activities n Research your family history by interviewing relatives. Use letters, audio recordings, and videotape to compile a report on an important time for your family. Make note of differing observations about the same event. n After research your family create a simple family tree to share in class. Students will be able to go to to help them with this assignment. n Create a timeline of your family using any important date that will show your families history.

American Heritage Activities n Port of entry activity Students will use their detective skills to uncover the stories of immigrants to the United States. This activity is a fun and exciting way to allow the students to learn about immigration and how their American Heritage came to be. n Historical Detective Students will be given a case that needs to be solved created by the American Memory web site. They will search the American Memory collections to solve the riddle and learn about many parts of American Heritage along the way.

People and Societies Web Sites n This website has letters and journals from people of the past in Ohio about their lives and other interesting facts. n This website deals with early settlers, Indians, and different learning games. n ml Website with games and activities dealing with the history and people of Ohio. ml ml

People Websites cont’d n Website made especially for kids with games, letters, and information about Ohio’s people of the past. n This is a website dedicated to the importance of African Americans to Ohio’s history. It contains letters, newspaper articles, journals, and other documents.

People in Societies Activities n Give students a map to locate where various groups have settled--Japanese, African-Americans. Discuss reasons for these groups settling where they have. n Discuss different cultures in Ohio and study their origins and how they came to Ohio

People’s Activities cont’d n Divide students into groups of five. Allow students to devise their own cultures and where they will be located in the state of Ohio, and graph new cultures on an overhead to be made into a large wall map. n Have students develop a system of government for their culture.

People’s Activities cont’d n Have students develop numbers of elderly, children, disabled people, mental disorders, etc. Discuss how different cultures deal with these aspects--Japanese used to have a cut off age for elderly, then they were euthanized, China regulates the number of children that couples can have.

World Interactions Web Sites n Game for students to learn about different regions and places in the United States n bin/genobject/maproom/tig51f1 Students can come to this site and look at many maps and learn more about how maps work. bin/genobject/maproom/tig51f1 bin/genobject/maproom/tig51f1 n At this site the students can use this national Atlas of the United States and explore our 50 states in great detail.

Web Sites cont’d n This site will provide the students country information from around the world, increasing the students cultural awareness. n At this site the students will become aware of the exchange of goods from the past to the present.

World Interactions Activities n The students will read many different types of maps and relate them back to where they live. n On chart paper, copy and display the poem “Columbus Day.” After the children read it, have them research Columbus’ Voyage and draw maps of it. In a class discussion, the children will share and explain their maps.

World Interaction Activities cont’d n The students will create a travel plan for another classmate to follow anywhere around the world. The students will trade directions and see if they can get to the other students types of world maps and directions. n The students will be in cooperative learning groups and study selected communities from around the world. They will then compare and contrast their culture to our own culture. n Students will find out what resources Ohio provides and receives from other places and will make a chart of all these resources.

Decision Making & Resources Web Sites n This is showing demand for certain goods created in the class store. n This discusses how the story used immediate goods and resources to make their product n l1w.htm This is to inform those who want to learn about saving and investing in the government or bonds. l1w.htm l1w.htm

Decision Making Web Sites cont’d n Students will get into groups and discuss materials that would be made of 50 recycled materials to sell to their classmates n ookieCaper This is exploring what cookies are better, and about major companies and their production of goods ookieCaper ookieCaper

Decision Making & Resources Activities n Have a class store set up to work on coins, checks, and credit cards. Have the class shop using American coins, as well as the currency of another country. n Have groups create land and show and tell what they would need to do to cultivate the land. n Have the class investigate how different people save money and make a chart of the results.

Decision Making and Resources cont’d n Have the students work for tokens in the classroom. They will then be able to use the tokens for materials in the classroom. n Have each student, or group, research a certain service provided by the local government, and give a presentation on what they have discovered.

Democratic Process Web Sites n Gives information on the election process, current issues, and candidates and their positions. n Internet for final justice—Computer Judge Judy. Not legally binding and the students can see process for “street justice.” n ml Students can take a tour and look at Supreme Court decisions. ml ml

Democratic Websites cont’d n Students can take a tour of the Senate building and contact their state senator. n m Students can observe laws and rules from different states around the country and compare and contrast them. m m

Democratic Process Activities n Bring in a police officer as a guest speaker on how the police department works for the people, that it is a privilege the way it is here in America. n Have a series of mock trials about different cases involving students as citizens deciding on real situations of the community.

Democratic Activities cont’d n Bring in a firefighter as a guest speaker to discuss how important it is for citizens to take part in the decisions for public services--like giving money to the fire department. n Have lists of Ohio’s laws for students to support/refute to the rest of the class, and maybe the principal.

Democratic Activities cont’d n Give students a set budget and three situations. Divide the class into three groups in which each group gets a situation. Each group must present their situation to the class in a report of why their situation should receive the money.

This also gives the teachers and the students different resources to use ool.html ool.html n Here student are able to get involved in the current issues

Citizenship Rights & Responsibilities Activities n Have each student research something occuring in the news regarding local issues. Have them present what they discovered to the class. n Analyze a newspaper to see what information is factual or not true. n Have the class create classroom rules, and explain why these rules are important.

Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities cont’d n Have a group of students elected for positions in the classroom for behavior management, lunch count, and cleaning up in the classroom. n Have a group of students facilitate the project of planting flowers and trees in the school yard.

Conclusion n Students will have a better base of knowledge for governmental processes in the state of Ohio. n Students will be able to explain the basic principles of supply and demand. n Students will gain more insight about the history of the people of Ohio. n Students will be exposed to goods made and distributed in Ohio.

Conclusion cont’d n Students will become aware of events in the news concerning their community. n Students will gain a broader spectrum for different cultures around the world.
