Presentation transcript:

The book of Revelation is one of the most abused and misused books in the Bible (2 Pet. 3:17) The J.W.s misuse portions of chapter 7 Premillennialists misuse portions of chapters 13, 16, 20, etc. Many offer numerous speculative theories about end-times from this book

How are we to properly understand and make sense of this book? The Lord gives us four clues in the first three verses of the book! We have to pay attention to these four clues just like reading the instruction manual first! These four points must be established first if we are to make any sense of the book; like putting down four tent pegs first before erecting the rest of the tent

The Four “Tent Pegs” of Revelation 1:1-3 Four Clues to Understanding the Book

Clue #1: A book of signs and symbols 1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show unto his servants, even the things which must shortly come to pass: and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John; 2 who bare witness of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, even of all things that he saw. 3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of the prophecy, and keep the things that are written therein: for the time is at hand.

Revelation 1: The book is a “revelation” given in signs (signified) and symbols which John “saw”

Clue #2: A book for first-century Christians 1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show unto his servants, even the things which must shortly come to pass: and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John; 2 who bare witness of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, even of all things that he saw. 3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of the prophecy, and keep the things that are written therein: for the time is at hand.

Revelation 1: The book is a “revelation” given in signs (signified) and symbols which John “saw” 2. The book was originally addressed to, Christians in the first century, the Lord’s “servants”

Clue #3: A book with events that are near; coming shortly 1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show unto his servants, even the things which must shortly come to pass: and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John; 2 who bare witness of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, even of all things that he saw. 3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of the prophecy, and keep the things that are written therein: for the time is at hand.

Revelation 1: The book is a “revelation” given in signs (signified) and symbols which John “saw” 2. The book was originally addressed to, Christians in the first century, the Lord’s “servants” 3. The book contains events which must shortly come to pass (1:19; 4:1)

Clue #4: A book to be read, heard, and kept (obeyed) 1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show unto his servants, even the things which must shortly come to pass: and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John; 2 who bare witness of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, even of all things that he saw.

The book contains events which must shortly come to pass 4. The book has words that were meant to be read, heard, and kept (practical, not speculative)

Revelation 22: And he said unto me, These words are faithful and true: and the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angels to show unto his servants the things which must shortly come to pass. 7 And behold, I come quickly. Blessed is he that keepeth the words of the prophecy of this book. 8 And I John am he that heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel that showed me these things. 9 And he saith unto me, See thou do it not: I am a fellow-servant with thee and with thy brethren the prophets, and with them that keep the words of this book: worship God. 10 And he saith unto me, Seal not up the words of the prophecy of this book; for the time is at hand. 11 He that is unrighteous, let him do unrighteousness still: and he that is filthy, let him be made filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him do righteousness still: and he that is holy, let him be made holy still. 12 Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to render to each man according as his work is. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. 14 Blessed are they that wash their robes, that they may have the right to come to the tree of life, and may enter in by the gates into the city.

Revelation 22: Without are the dogs, and the sorcerers, and the fornicators, and the murderers, and the idolaters, and every one that loveth and maketh a lie. 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things for the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright, the morning star. 17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And he that heareth, let him say, Come. And he that is athirst, let him come: he that will, let him take the water of life freely. 18 I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, if any man shall add unto them, God shall add unto him the plagues which are written in this book: 19 and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life, and out of the holy city, which are written in this book. 20 He who testifieth these things saith, Yea: I come quickly. Amen: come, Lord Jesus. 21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with the saints. Amen.

Revelation 22: The book is a “revelation” given in signs (signified) and symbols which John “saw” 2. The book was originally addressed to, Christians in the first century, the Lord’s “servants” 3. The book contains events which must shortly come to pass 4. The book has words that were meant to be read, heard, and kept (practical, not speculative)

#1 - When you read Revelation ask, “What do the signs point to, what do they symbolize?” “I saw” found 47 times (1:11-12, 17; 19; 4:1; etc.); John was “in the Spirit” (1:10; 4:2; 17:3; 21:10) The meaning is in the symbolic message, not the sign itself (the use of “like” and “as”) Look for the OT background to these signs and symbols (consult the side-margin references)

#2 - When you read Revelation ask, “What were these first-century Christians experiencing?” The persecuted: faithful NT Christians experiencing tribulation and trial (1:4,9; 2:9-10; 3:10; 6:9-11; 7:3, 14; 11:7; 13:15; 19:10; 20:4) are told that they will be victorious (11:18; 12:11; 15:2; 17:14) The persecutors: The Devil (12:9,17; 20:3, 7-10) and the Roman authorities (13:7; 16:5-7; 17:6; 18:20, 24; 19:2) are told that they will be judged and conquered (20:10)

#3 - When you read Revelation ask, “When did these events take place?” Look for a fulfillment that comes “shortly” or “quickly”. Jesus would come quickly and judge the churches (2:5, 16, 25; 3:9-11; 22:7, 12, 20) Jesus would come quickly and judge the Devil and Rome (6:16-17; 10:7; 14:7; 16:5, 15; 17:1; 18:8, 10, 20; ; 19:2, 11; 20:4) How quick is “quickly” (1:1 [Dan. 2:28]; 22:10 [Dan. 8:26] )? Less than 500 years!

#4 - When you read Revelation ask, “What can I read, hear, and keep today that is the same?” Look for the practical, not the speculative. Do I need to “hear” (2:7, 11, 17, etc., 13:9-10)? Do I need to “overcome” (2:7, 11, 17, etc.; 21:7)? Do I need to “know” that Jesus will search me (2:23)? Do I need to “hold fast” (2:25)?

Do I need to “follow the Lamb” (14:4-5)? Do I need to “fear God” and “worship him” (14:7)? Do I need to “keep the commandments” (14:12)? Do I need to “die in the Lord” (14:13)? Do I need to “watch” (16:15)? Do I need to remain “faithful” (17:14)?

Do I need to “have no fellowship” with sin (18:4)? Do I need to maintain “righteous acts” (19:8)? Do I need to consider that I will be judged by my “works” (2:23; 18:6; 20:12-13; 22:12)? Do I need to have my name in the Lamb’s “book of life” (3:5; 13:8; 17:8; 20:12, 15; 21:27) Do I need to “wash” my robes (22:14)? Do I need to “come” when the Spirit calls (22:17)?
