Getting Started Workshop #2 CERRA National Board Candidate Support Workshop Toolkit WS2 2010

CERRA National Board Toolkit 2 Essential Questions How do I organize my time to complete the portfolio? What management strategies can I use to help me in the NB process? What resources do I have available to help me?

CERRA National Board Toolkit 3 Activity 1 Mark Your Calendars

CERRA National Board Toolkit 4 What To Do First? Find “First Time Candidates” page in the “Part 1: General Portfolio Instructions” portion of the NB Portfolio instructions. Flag this page with a Post-it ® note. Read the page. Turn to an elbow partner and “say something”: What stands out for you? Rephrase an important point. Ask a question.

CERRA National Board Toolkit 5 Resources: Organizing and Time Management Find the “Locating and Using Important Resources” section in the “Phase 1: Prepare” portion of the Part 1: General Portfolio instructions. Look through the section. Flag items you may want to revisit with a Post-it ® note. What stands out in your mind in terms of organization and resources, from the information you have read?

CERRA National Board Toolkit 6 Mark Your Calendars Find the “Managing Your Time” section in the “Phase 2: Develop” portion of the Part 1: General Portfolio instructions. Use the Mark Your Calendar Worksheet to help you mark important dates on your calendar. What other dates or considerations may you want to be mindful of in planning your time? What are you going to do first?

CERRA National Board Toolkit 7 This calendar, found in the “Managing Your Time” section of your General Portfolio instructions suggests chunks of time spent on each process: collecting evidence, selecting evidence and so on. Some candidates prefer to “juggle” their entries – working on one almost through completion before beginning the next.

CERRA National Board Toolkit 8 The portfolio process can be spread across the time you have available to devote to it. The pattern of work remains the same.

CERRA National Board Toolkit 9 Customize your own calendar based on your time constraints and your work style. Select the system that works for you!

CERRA National Board Toolkit 10 Think About It…. In what different ways might you make time for NB Portfolio work in a schedule that is already jam-packed?

CERRA National Board Toolkit 11 Activity 2 National Board Language

CERRA National Board Toolkit 12 Talk About It… What words or phraseology have you discovered in reading the portfolio that weren’t clear to you at first glance?

CERRA National Board Toolkit 13 Portfolio Related Terms Locate the “Learning Portfolio Related Terms” in the Phase 1: Prepare section of your General Portfolio instructions. Read through the terms. Mark information you feel is important to remember. Talk at your table: New Learning? Concerns? Questions?

CERRA National Board Toolkit 14 Discussion Managing the Work

CERRA National Board Toolkit 15 Portfolio Tips Create a folder or notebook for each entry: Electronic: Label a folder for each entry and keep that folder within a folder for NB Hard Copy: Organize your printed material, student work, pictures, notes, etc. in folders or file boxes Save your work often – keep duplicate files on data storage devices (CDs or jump drives, etc.) Collect student/adult release forms early – take advantage of parent conferences to get them signed.

CERRA National Board Toolkit 16 Portfolio Tips Practice videotaping. Videotape – analyze the tape – reflect and learn – videotape some more! Consistently use the Communication Log or some other record-keeping document from the beginning of school. Keep copies of student work samples from more students than you actually plan to use so you have choices.

CERRA National Board Toolkit 17 Assessment Center Tips Create 6 folders, notebooks or file boxes - one for each Assessment Center Descriptor Collect resources: books, articles, contacts, etc. Create a K-N-R chart for each prompt K: What I know about the subject N: What I need and/or what I need to learn R: What resources might help me Keep the chart handy – revisit it and revise it often

CERRA National Board Toolkit 18 Activity 3 Building a Network

CERRA National Board Toolkit 19 Who Can You Call On? What NBCTs might be able to help in your school or district? What “experts” might you consider as resources? What support might you need from the District Liaison? What time and place can you find to meet as a group?
