Answer On days when there is heavy rainfall, the sewers to the Montréal wastewater treatment plant overflow and cannot collect all the wastewater. Many contaminants are then discharged directly into the river without being treated.

**Plastic: A material made of polymers, to which other substances may be added to obtain certain desirable properties.

Petroleum to Plastics Here’s the route taken in the petroleum-to-plastics process: 1. Petroleum is drilled and transported to a refinery. 2. Crude oil and natural gas are refined into ethane, propane, hundreds of other petrochemical products and, of course, fuel for your car. 3. Ethane and propane are "cracked" into ethylene and propylene, using high- temperature furnaces. 4. Catalyst is combined with ethylene or propylene in a reactor, resulting in "fluff," a powdered material (polymer) resembling laundry detergent. 5. Fluff is combined with additives in a continuous blender. 6. Polymer is fed to an extruder where it is melted. 7. Melted plastic is cooled then fed to a pelletizer that cuts the product into small pellets. 8. Pellets are shipped to customers. 9. Customers manufacture plastic products by using processes such as extrusion, injection molding, blow molding, etc.

**Thermoplastic: Is a plastic that becomes soft enough when heated to be moulded or remoulded and that hardens enough when cooled to hold its shape. Plywood is made from thin veneers (thin sheets of wood) glued together

**Thermosetting Plastic: Is a plastic that remains permanently hard, even when heated. Vulcanized Rubber – cross linked

**Composite: Is formed by combining materials from different categories to obtain a material with enhanced properties. Various composite materials are used in structures such as the Boeing 777 because of their strength, and weight savings. Composites also offer resistance to fatigue, corrosion and impact damage.

Lightweight Composites are incredibly lightweight, especially in comparison to materials like concrete, metal, and wood. Often a composite structure will weigh 1/4 that of a steel structure with the same strength. That means, a car made from composites can weigh 1/4 that of a car made from steel. This equates to serious fuel savings.

High Strength Composite materials are extremely strong, especially per unit of weight. An example of this are the high tenacity structural fibers used in body armor. Due to high strength composites, soldiers are well protected from blast and ballistic threats.

Corrosion and Chemical Resistance Composites are highly resistant to chemicals and will never rust or corrode. This is why the marine industry was one of the first to adopt the use of composites. Boats made with fiberglass can stay in the highly corrosive salt water without rusting. fiberglass
