OPENING DAY 2012 THE “ONE MORE” CAMPAIGN

BACKGROUND Goal 1: Increasing student success and academic excellence through student-centered instruction, student-centered support services, and dynamic technologies. Through the development of the Educational Master Plan and participation in Achieving the Dream, ELAC has sought to identify strategies to improve student success.

STUDENT PROGRESSION

PROGRESS MADE!!! In-course success is nearing the college target Persistence has already reached the college target Improvement is the result of a campuswide focus on student success Measurement Baseline Target In-course retention 85.42% 86.76% 90% In-course success 63.79% 66.79% 70% First-year persistence 53.47% 63.31% 59%

ONE MORE Making large goals achievable 69.5% student success college-wide 76 students completing courses in their first semester 70 students persisting 46 students completing Math students completing English graduates 12 transfers

“ONE MORE” STRATEGY

EDUCATIONAL MASTER PLAN Focus on objectives to achieve the Strategic Plan Goals 1.Student success 2.Equity in successful outcomes 3.Community-centered access 4.Effectiveness and accountability

“ONE MORE” STRATEGY Student Engagement Academic Excellence Student Support Services Professional Development First-year Experience Basic Skills Improvement Targeting Underrepresented Students Evaluation and Accountability

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT Ensure on-campus student engagement to increase academic achievement Student mentoring Cohort programs Help students become fulltime On-campus work experience Expanded college hour Career-focused education Enhance the Transfer Culture on campus Expand awareness of non-traditional transfer pathways

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Identify and implement scalable successful elements within special programs, such as Honors, Adelante, Athletics, Distance Education, etc. Develop and revise curriculum to demonstrate that disciplines are up-to-date and to expand articulation to more in-state/out-of state/private four-year colleges/universities Utilize the college’s online offerings and existing learning management systems to enhance student access for non-traditional students and accelerate progress for on- campus students Identify and promote best practices in dynamic and interactive online learning

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES Ensure adequate student support services through the development and implementation of student-centered interventions Proactive interventions to get students to the services they need Target first semester Evaluate current services for efficiency and effectiveness Online and face to face orientation Career services and integrated career assessment and academic preparation Strengthen college response to struggling students Evaluate dismissal procedures Develop opportunities for students to expand their educational experience at ELAC through non-classroom activities such as scientific lectures, demonstrations, and cultural events Enhance advisement to students about financing a college education, including understanding university financial aid and scholarships

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Provide sustained professional development training for faculty Year-round professional development program focused on effective instructional strategies Research-based principles of instruction Integration of course and program-learning outcomes Training to support faculty in identifying the unique academic needs of the students to address equity gaps

FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE Provide a comprehensive first-year experience that promotes and enhances student completion Evaluate application deadlines Target student support for first-time students Pre-college guidance program Early identification of “program of study” Summer bridge program

BASIC SKILLS IMPROVEMENT Increase the proportion of students who progress through the developmental math and English sequences {ATD} Use of noncredit Compression and acceleration models Assistance in grade norming processes Encouraging students master course material (better than a “C”) to improve success in subsequent courses Developing methods to encourage students to progress through the sequences through successive semesters Utilize support services such as specialized tutoring, automated diagnostics, and remediated services Create programs to prevent “cold assessment” and prepare students to take placement exams {ATD}

TARGETING UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS Create strategies to recruit and support underrepresented groups and to eliminate the achievement gap Identify and target high-impact courses with disparate success rates Improve the transfer rate for underrepresented groups Tailor the presentation of the university transfer process to specifically address cultural concerns of students and their families

EVALUATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY Create a college consensus defining “completion” Expand campus dialog on student outcomes Develop a method to evaluate the effectiveness and classroom application of student-centered instruction strategies offered through Professional Development Use of learning assessment to further student success

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE The Educational Master Plan was developed to be broad in context The Plan allows each department to develop their own actions that will help the college achieve its objectives and goals Ensure on-campus student engagement to increase academic achievement. Review and restructure existing college mentor programs to serve a greater number of both high- achieving and struggling students.
