What is Fossil? Fossils are traces or remains of living things from long ago. Fossils can be mineralized bones, teeth, shells, wood, or actual unaltered.

Fossils Lesson 8

6 ways an organism can turn into fossils: Unaltered preservation( like insects or plant parts trapped in amber, a hardened form of tree sap) Permineralization-petrification(in which rock like minerals seep in slowly and replace the original organic tissues) Replacement- an organisms hard parts are replaced by other minerals.

6 ways continued… Carbonization- coalification Recystalization-hard parts either revert to more stable minerals or small crystals turn into larger crystals Authigenic Preservation-Molds and casts of organisms that have been destroyed or dissolved (Enchanted, n.d. p.2).

Computer Lab: Every group will have a certain way that organisms turn into fossils. Please think of a way to present your material to the rest of class. Be creative! How do fossils relate to history? What do you personally think about your way?
