Density All substances have different densities, therefore, you can identify a substance if you know its density The formula to calculate something’s density.
The density is the ratio of mass (stuff that makes up an object) and its volume (the amount of space that stuff takes up). The more mass an object has.
 Property- a characteristic that helps identify an object  *Some common properties are: color, shape, size, feel, taste, smell, mass, volume.

Volume, Mass, and Density Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Mass is a measure of how much matter is in an object. Mass can be expressed.

Presentation transcript:

Riley Spring D period 10-7-14 Gummy Bear Lab Problem: what will happen to the mass and the volume of a gummy bear when it’s in water overnight? Hypothesis: If the gummy bear is left in water overnight, then it will suck up the water like a sponge and get bigger.

Summary In the experiment, “ Gummy Bear Lab”, people did an experiment on density. First, get a gummy bear,( the color doesn't matter.) Then, after a gummy bear is picked , find it’s length, width, and height in centimeters. After that, find the volume of the gummy bear. ( length x width x height ) Next, find the mass of the gummy bear and the mass of the beaker that the gummy is going in. Then find the mass of them both combined. Finally, you can calculate the density. On the second day, you got your bear and noticed many things. It was fragile, and full of water. Being genital, do the experiment like the first time with the gummy. Calculate the volume, mass, and density. Then compare your results.

Analysis In the gummy bear lab experiment, people calculated mass volume and density. To find the volume of the gummy bear, people must multiply the length by the width by the height. Day 1 height 10cm x 10cm x 20 cm =200cm3 1mL x 1mL x 2mL = 2mL Day 2 height 10cm x 20cm x 30 cm= 600cm3 1.5mL x 2mL x 3mL=9mL Mass-density day 1 1.5 cm Mass-density day 2 8.7

conclusion In conclusion of this experiment. Placing a gummy bear in beaker of water overnight changes its density, mass, and volume.

Questions & Answers What as the change in volume from day 1 to day2? The change I volume from day 1 to day was 700mL. The first day the volume was 200mL and the second day the volume was 9000mL. So, the difference between 9000mL and 200mL is 700mL. what was the change in mass from day 1 to day 2? The change in mass from day 1 from day 2 was 4.2. The first day the mass was 3.6 and the second day the mass was 7.8. So, the difference between 7.8 and 3.6 is 4.2. Why do you think water displacement is more accurate for this experiment? I think it would be more accurate because it is very easy to use and is very accurate. What is the independent and the dependant variable in this experiment? The independent variable in this experiment would be the water and the dependant variable in this experiment would be the mass of the bear and the volume of the bear.. How do you find density? Did the density of the bear decrease or increase over night? It decreased. To find the density from day one to day two, I had to divide the mass divided by the volume.
