Overview Statement of the Problem Product Description and Intended Use Design and Development Deliverables Proof of Design Conclusion

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Introduction KTBH – Small Business Law Firm – Number of Employees: – Number of IT Employees: 2 Problem – Need an efficient way of controlling which Windows Updates are installed on their end-users’ machines while reducing the amount of hardware on the company network

Current Configuration

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND INTENDED USE

Project Description and Intended Use Provide a more-efficient way to manage company servers – Deploy a virtualization environment using VMware vSphere 4 Essentials Plus – Migrate current servers to virtual environment – Deploy Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) Benefits – Use resources more efficiently – Minimizes hardware needs – Creates an up-to-date network – Increased Redundancy

User Profiles IT staff – Main users – Physical control of servers – Responsible for updates/changes to server – Responsible for any testing End-users – Use of the new system will be transparent – Use of all business-related software will still be accessible

Design Protocols Virtual Host Servers (quantity: 2) – Dell PowerEdge R710 2-X5550 Xeon Processor 24GB Memory (6x4GB) 2- 73GB 10k RPM Serial Attached SCSI 2.5” Hot Plug Hard Drive

Design Protocols Virtual Server #1 – DNS – DHCP – Domain Controller Virtual Server #2 – Secondary DNS – Domain Controller Virtual Server #3 – WSUS

Design Protocols Additional Architecture Added Outside of the Project – EMC SAN Increased redundancy Allows for Hosts to transfer virtual machines – Templates Allows for quicker spawning of virtual machines – Windows Server 2008 – Windows Server 2003 – Windows XP – P2V technology Allows for a copy of the physical box to be moved to a new virtual machine – SQL Servers

New Configuration

Testing Plan Dell PowerEdge R710 servers – Hardware diagnostics will be run to validate components are functioning as expected. – Server will be shut-down and rebooted several times while reviewing logs to ensure no problems have occurred. Virtual Servers: – Servers will be rebooted several times to ensure proper startup. – Creation of several test accounts to ensure that the Domain Controller, DNS, and DHCP are functioning properly. – Send out updates through WSUS to ensure that the user receives the update alert, and that all the administrative options configured are working (i.e. logging of users who do not install update by deadline).

Risk Management RiskLevelMitigation Scope creep/ Project ChangeHigh Review project plan and current project status frequently with KTBH Failure to get time approvals from KTBH purchasing committee High Work with Jeff Middendorf closely to ensure that the urgency of these approvals is passed on to the board VMware Server build tasks taking longer than expected Medium Using reference books and customer support to assist if problems arise. Fall behind project timeline for key tasks MediumFrequently review the timeline with KTBH Going over BudgetLow Budget was created working closely with Jeff Middendorf and will be monitored throughout the project. Prices in budget reflect initial price quotes before additional discounts from vendors were applied to hardware.

DELIVERABLES

Deliverables The deliverables for my project are: 1.Install and configure a virtual server environment 2.Install and configure WSUS on a virtual server 3.Migrate Domain Controller, DNS, and DHCP to the virtual servers 4.Test/Implement the new virtual environment 5.Decommission three servers from the network when once the virtual servers are running 6.Change any needed login scripts and drive mappings
