Math Quest:Into Geometry Grades 4-6 By Alex Macdonald

Concepts to Cover Geometric Shapes Perimeter & Area of Geometric Shapes Circumference & Area of a Circle Computation Skills –Addition –Subtraction –Multiplication

Perimeter The perimeter of a shape is the distance around the item. Think about building a fence to enclose the shape. Add all the sides to find the perimeter =

Block of Wax The block of wax below has a length of 24 inches and a width of 14 inches. What is the perimeter of the wax?

. Mobile Mini We use a mobile mini to store extra items at our school. The length of the container is 24 feet and the height is 7 feet. What is the perimeter of this side of the mobile mini?

Library Door The door to the Media Center is 81 inches tall and 36 inches wide. How much metal edging (in inches) was needed to surround the door? Challenge--Can you convert the inches to feet and inches?

Present and a Card The business card is 2 inches wide and 3.5 inches long. The present is 8 inches long and 6 inches wide. Find the perimeter of each shape.

Picture Frames The top picture frame is 18 inches long and 9 inches wide. Each of the bottom frames is 11 inches tall and 9 inches wide. How much more wood will it take to make the bottom three frames than the top frame? Hint- frames use perimeters

How far around are these items? We need to buy edging to go around each shape. The pillow is a square. Each side is 16 inches across. The chest is 2 feet wide and 3.5 feet long. Find the perimeter of each shape to tell us how much edging we need for each item.

Area of a Rectangle The area formula for a rectangle is… Base x Height (BxH) or Length x Width (LxW) LENGTH OR BASE W I D T H or H E I G H T

Block of Wax The block of wax below has a length of 24 inches and a width of 14 inches. What is the area of the wax?

Mobile Mini We use a mobile mini to store extra items at our school. The length of the container is 24 feet and the height is 7 feet. What is the area of this side of the mobile mini?

Present and a Business Card The business card is 2 inches wide and 3.5 inches wide. The present is 8 inches long and 6 inches wide. How much smaller is the card than the present?

Pillow and a Chest The pillow is a square. Each side is 16 inches across. The chest is 2 feet wide and 3.5 feet long. How much larger is the area of the top of the chest than the pillow? Hint- convert to inches before starting…

Purple Pillow vs. Wax The purple pillow is 2 inches longer on each end than the block of wax. It is also 1.5 inches wider on each side than the block of wax. Find the area of the pillow using the information you solved already for the block of wax.

Circumference The circumference is formula to find the distance around a circle. C= pi x diameter Or C= pi x 2(radius)

Circumference of 2 Circles The smaller circle has a diameter of 9 inches. The larger circle has a diameter of 14 inches. Find the circumference of each circle.

Stool Top The stool top is about 11 inches across. The teacher wants to put a decorative skirting around the top to make it nicer. How much material will she need to skirt the stool? Solve for circumference.

Speaker Portal The inner speaker is 4 inches across. The outer frame is 6 inches across. How much larger is the circumference of the outer circle than the inner circle?

Area of a Circle The Area formula for a circle is… Pi x radius squared (3.14 x R 2)

Manhole Cover This manhole cover is approximately 26 inches across. What is the circumference of the cover? What is the area of the cover?

Sunflowers The green inner portion is 3 inches across. The orange surrounding section is 5.5 inches across. How much larger is the area of the orange section than the green section?

Challenge Problems The following problems are rather difficult. They require to use both area formulas from circles, squares, and rectangles. Good luck… Look back to your formulas if needed to solve.

Another Speaker The larger is square is 14 inches on each side. The smaller speaker portion is 2 inches smaller on each side. How much smaller is the inner portion of the shape?

Power Boxes The larger box has each side at 15 inches. The smaller box has each side at 8 inches. How much more area does the larger box have?

T.P. vs. A Lid The toilet paper roll is 5 inches across. The lid below is 7 inches across. How much smaller is the circumference of the toilet paper roll than the plastic lid?

Speaker and the Box The speaker is placed in a box for protection from the weather. The box measures 11 inches on each side. The speaker has a radius of 3 inches. How much larger is the area of the box than the speaker?

Circles The smaller circle has a diameter of 9 inches. The larger circle has a diameter of 14 inches. How much more area does the larger circle occupy?

CD and a Laptop The CD has a radius of 2.5 inches. The laptop has a length of 19 inches and a width of 12 inches. How much larger in area is the laptop than the CD? Hint- first find the area of each figure.

Geometry – Project Math Turn in your work and solutions to Mr. Macdonald in the front office. No work, no rewards. The purpose of this was to extend the skills of the students that use it. We used a basic digital camera and clip art to design the unit.
