Faculty and Administrators Working Together to Achieve Significant Curricular Reform Notes on Phase I Define Problem Need to review and revise gen. ed. to accommodate assessment. Accreditation forcing recognition of the need for gen. ed. Reform. CC – clear distinction between liberal arts and work force sides – necessary for student success – agreed upon Support Learning/Create Partnerships Faculty development in the area of the innovation. Used internal and external expertise Sent team to NC workshop – formed a cohesive group to steer project. Dialogues on campus – lunch sessions Threatening letters, fees – carrot vs. stick Teaching centers/newsletters

Faculty and Administrators Working Together to Achieve Significant Curricular Reform Notes on Phase I

Faculty and Administrators Working Together to Achieve Significant Curricular Reform Notes on Phase II How do you get the principles endorsed? Model: base on outcomes, not courses – develop outcomes and assessment Cant start from a blank slate Review literature – next step to take that to department/school meetings –ask what the implications are – think about it where faculty live Defining the specifics brings out the turf issues – if the principles are in place it can keep the process moving Form small voluntary groups of gen ed faculty – ask what is common – an inductive approach.

Faculty and Administrators Working Together to Achieve Significant Curricular Reform Notes on Phase II

Faculty and Administrators Working Together to Achieve Significant Curricular Reform Notes on Phase III How to negotiate the differences Provide alternatives to help get buy-in New groups want to change at EVERY meeting Dont take it to the Senate until you know it is going to pass. – Learning phase critical – and it takes time Think as a sales-person. Begin the conversation with the needs important to the customer – Find the common ground first (THIS SEEMS LIKE A THEME)
