Maureen Curran and Mary Lou Aalbers Hazelwood School District TEACHER TIPS

The following lessons are addressing these standards: Identify, describe, compare, classify, and represent geometric figures (MO 1.4, 1.6, 2.1) Investigate and apply geometric properties and relationships (MO 1.6, 2.4, 3.6)

Teacher Page You will need to click the mouse to show the answers for activities. This will allow you to control the timing of answers shown. We suggest that students keep a journal and respond to questions in this presentation. It is critical for students to use writing skills to explain their answers. Please take time to discuss possible solutions to problems.

List all the properties of this cylinder in your journal. List all the properties of the rectangular prism in your journal.

56 y The sum of two sides of a triangles must always equal MORE than the third side. If y is a whole number, what values could it have?

56 y With sides of 5 and 6, the third side can be 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,or 2. It could not be 11 or more because it would equal (or exceed) the sum of the other two sides. It could not be 1 because two sides (5 and 1) would not equal more than the third side (6).

1. How many quarter inch squares does it take to make an inch square? Draw it with a ruler! 2. How many quarter-inch cubes does it take to make an inch cube? Build it!

How many quarter inch squares does it take to make an inch square? It takes 4 squares.

2. How many quarter-inch cubes does it take to make an inch cube? Build it! It takes 64 quarter- inch cubes to build an inch cube.
