We’ve done some things right Disparate institutions CAN agree on software design Distributed teams can build enterprise-scale software Commercial partners can get involved in this model It really does work! We can extend it to other models, such as Saas
We’ve had some issues The economy – On the upside, more interest – On the downside, one of our partners has been forced to withdraw – We are communicating that open source allows saved costs and control of destiny
We’ve had some issues Governance – We’ve made some tweaks in the projects – For example: Updated Rice charter to balance investing partner and application project influence Updated positions and governance may be forthcoming in Student to reflect the changes in the cycle of the project Updated Kuali Coeus timeline to facilitate merger with Coeus community
We’ve had some issues Implementations – On the upside, we have had successful implementations and will have many more this year – On the downside, resources of partners are stretched to continue to develop the code, while implementing the system on campus
We’ve had some issues Need to develop a new contribution model beyond our original approach
Contribution Model Purpose – Historically, Kuali has been “community source” – Want to begin leveraging resources more widely – Must maintain quality !! CFOs require that debits & credits balance – Want to learn from other open source models
Contribution Model Approach – Create an open and public web site for contributions – Use open tools to manage the process – Create ‘Levels of Trust’ for communication purposes – Code that is incorporated in an official release must meet Kuali standards – This is still under discussion and should be published later this year
