Distributed Voyager (DVoy) Web Services

Distributed Voyager (DVoy) System Layered Map Time Chart ProvidersUsers Vector GIS Data Databases SQL Tables Web Images Voyager Web Services Publish, Find, Bind Data & Tool Catalog Uniform Access Scatter Chart Select, Explore, Process, Analyze multidimensional data Maintain Distributed Data; Heterogeneous coding, access Connect providers to users; Homogenize data access

Web Publish HTTP, FTP Data & Tool Access though a Web Service Wrapper Service Broker Publish Service Consumer Find Access Ordinary web content can be delivered as a Web Service through a Proxy Server. The Wrapper Service converts HTTP/FTP service to XML Web service The Wrapper Service is published as a web service to the Broker The User finds the service from the broker and accesses the Wrapper to use the service Service Wrapper HTTP/FTP Service User Chain

Smoke Management Application A web services based network is well suited to address these needs. It allows current data and tool providers to join a fire emissions network with minimal impact on their current operations It provides facilities for analyzing data (observation, model output, imagery, etc.) and generating value added information using web-based tools It serves as a platform that can easily be adapted for multiple user interfaces (e.g., simple public interface and more complex interface for fire managers) The fire emissions community needs an integrated network of data and tools for: integrating disparate, heterogeneous fire emissions related data projecting the impact of fire emissions historical analysis of fire emissions communicating fire emissions information to agencies, researchers, and the public

Current DVoy User Interface Components Catalog: User selects among distributed ‘wrapped’ data Map View: Displays Selected Data Control Panel: Provides user with facilities to customize display NOTE: The data sources are physically located on multiple databases across the country (NASA SQL, CIRA SQL, NOAA SQL …) Terry, the powerplant data could be handled in a similar fashion from the EPA Oracle database

Idaho Fires Example (August 2000) ASTR Fire Locations SeaWiFS Image showing smoke dispersion DVoy settings can be saved for future use. To view a live display of Idaho fires go to: Satellite imagery and satellite fire observations are spatially integrated to show fire sources and smoke transport

Idaho Fires Example (August 2000) ASTR Fire Locations Processed SeaWiFS image showing aerosol optical depth Derived aerosol optical depth provides a focused look at smoke dispersion The SeaWiFS reflectance image is hidden to expose the aerosol optical depth image ‘below’ it

Overlaying PM2.5 Concentration Data PM2.5 data from the IMPROVE and AIRS database at Colorado State provide supporting evidence for smoke impacts Moving the cursor over the PM2.5 locations shows the lat, lon, and concentration for that monitor Live version at:

Future Functionality The current state of DVoy uses state-of-the art technologies in integrating data from heterogeneous databases and web mapping tools similar to those used in other ongoing projects such as Chaitan Baru’s I2T project and the OpenGIS Consortium’s Interoperability Program. Current technology allows relatively simple access and viewing of data. Future research will extend beyond the sharing and viewing of data and will develop new functionality for working with and processing the shared data. New functionality currently under development include a time series display simple spatial interpolation tool for generating contour plots These two additions will provide a proof of concept for proposing more advanced facilities in working with fire emissions related data and tools.

DVoy and B-RAINS Interoperability Bluesky RAINS DVoy Other Fire/Smoke Web Tools and Portals FASTRACS PFIRS (California) B-RAINS and DVoy will use Open GIS Consortium (OGC) standards to interoperate. B-RAINS uses ESRI ArcIMS WebGIS which has a built-in OGC connector. DVoy already has the capability to access OGC compliant tools and, in the near future, will be accessible by other OGC compliant applications. Other Fire/Smoke Data
