Student Connections of the Author’s Background & Historical Influences to the Novel The Road He has a son who helped influence his story The Road. This reflects in the work from the relationship between the man and his son and the things that he teaches him. The Cold War and nuclear scares could've been historical events that influenced the themes and setting of The Road. Cormac McCarthy was already an adult by the time the threat of nuclear war was imminent. This could influence this writing because he could actually see first hand the destruction of a nuclear bomb. He is writing about post nuclear disaster which obviously was a concern during a majority of his life. His background as a father influenced his writing by showing his love for his son…. He was his inspiration to write The Road. Also, living in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Cold War … apocalyptic fool of everyday life. The Road is a story about what could happen if he was in this situation. His son was a big influence in the book because he had a great love for his son. Also, Cormac was religious and he wrote about his worship of God in the story…. post-apocalyptic world… …Southern Gothic writing… relocating to the South Catholic high school… religious parts of book World War II

A central idea or statement that unifies and controls an entire literary work. a brief and meaningful insight OR a comprehensive vision of life it may be directly stated in the book, or it may only be implied. -a central, universal message For example… The immigrant experience is often one of disparity and isolation. People are all too willing to stand silently by in the face of cruelty and suffering of others, so long as it does not touch them personally. Love and human connections are essential to the survival of humanity. In extremely dire life-and-death situations, survival instincts often prevail over the moral teachings people ordinarily believe in and abide by.
