Presentation transcript:

Outline of Jonah, Chapter 4 Jonah “Became Angry,” Jonah 4:1. God appealed to Jonah, Jonah 4:2-4. Jonah made a Shelter, Jonah 4:5. The Lord Prepared a Plant, a worm, and a vehement east wind, Jonah 4:6-8. God sought to reason with Jonah, an “angry” prophet, Jonah 4:9-11.

Jonah “Became Angry.” The people of Nineveh repented, so God “relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them.” This “displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry,” Jonah 4:1. –Jonah had preached the truth to the Ninevites, but not “in love,” Eph. 4:15! In Contrast to Abraham who pleaded with God to save Sodom, Gen

God Appealed to Jonah “Is it right for you to be angry,” 4:2-4? Jonah stated why he had “fled;” he believed a loving God would spare a penitent people! 4:2; cf. Exodus 34:6-7. After crying out to God because of His “affliction,” 2:2; he now begs God “to take my life from me,” Jonah 4:3! God asked, “Is it right for you to be angry,” Jonah 4:4.

Jonah made a Shelter, 4:5 “So Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city. There he made himself a shelter and sat under it, till he might see what would become of the city,” Jonah 4:5. Jonah made a “shelter” for himself, but was “angry” because God had not destroyed Nineveh!

God’s Preparations “The Lord God prepared a plant…,” 4:6 -- Jonah was grateful for the plant. “God prepared a worm…” 4:7. -- The worm damaged the plant “God prepared a vehement east wind, 4:8 -- The sun beat upon Jonah’s head, and he wanted to die, East Wind associated with adversity.

God tried to Reason with Jonah, 4:9-11. For the second time God asked “is it right for you to be angry,” Jonah 4:4,9. –Jonah angry that Nineveh was spared, and angry that his plant was not spared! God stressed that People are more Important than Plants! Jonah 4: –God especially shows concern for infants, Jonah 4:11; cf. Matt. 19: He also has concern for animals. Deut. 25:4.

Lessons to be Learned from this Chapter God works behind the Scenes in ways man cannot Comprehend. Cf. Daniel 4:25; Jonah 1:4,17; 4:6-8. The Gist of this chapter (and book) is not the size of the fish, but the magnitude of God’s Pity! It is possible for God’s people to have misplaced Priorities.

Lessons to be Learned – Continued Sometimes it is not “right to be angry,” Jonah 4:1,4,9. Jonah was a lot like the elder brother of Luke 15: God has the last word, Jonah 4:10-11! –The last words in this book were the words of God. –The first words in this book were the words of God, Jonah 1:1-2.

Conclusion: Because God is the kind of God Jonah described in 4:2, He sent Jonah to preach to Nineveh, and because He is such a God he spared Nineveh when the people repented of their evil works. Because God is the kind of God Jonah described He sent Jesus to die for our sins! If it was imperative that The people of Nineveh obey Jonah’s instructions, it even more so that we obey Jesus!
