GIS Mapping with WebFOCUS and ESRI Agenda  What is GIS?  Benefits of GIS  ESRI Overview  WebFOCUS GBIS Solution  ESRI vs. Google Maps  Demo

What is GIS? Definition - The U.S. Geological Survey In the strictest sense, a GIS is a computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced information, i.e. data identified according to their locations. Practitioners also regard the total GIS as including operating personnel and the data that go into the system.

What is GIS? Definition – Environmental Science Research Institute A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing things that exist and events that happen on earth. GIS technology integrates common database operations such as query and statistical analysis with the unique visualization and geographic analysis benefits offered by maps.

What is GIS? Components  Hardware  Workstation  Mobile Devices  Web Servers  Software  ArcGIS  Data  Geodatabase (Data that references location)  Attribute Data (Data about that location)  People

Benefits of GIS  Unique analysis of business problems  Clearly identify patterns  Real time rendering of events  Optimal presentation of information  Save Time/Money  Increase Productivity

Benefits of GIS City of Richmond Police Department  New Year’s initiative (12/31/03)  49% reduction in random firearm events  246% increase in weapons seized  $15,000 in overtime cost savings  Less Police on duty = Higher Quality of Life

ESRI Overview  1969 – Founded as the Environmental Science Research Institute, a privately held consulting firm that specialized in land use analysis projects.  1982 – Launched its first commercial GIS package called ARC/INFO.  May 2004 – Released ArcGIS 9  March 26, 2008 – Released ArcGIS 9.2 SP5  ArcGIS 9.3 currently in Beta  Expected release is Q3 2008
