Congressional Action on USAID TB, 2014 House: House TB Elimination Caucus – now has 31 members! Including 8 Republicans House bilateral tuberculosis letter - This bipartisan letter asked for $400 million for global tuberculosis eradication efforts and was led by Representatives Eliot Engel (D-NY), Gene Green (D-TX), Don Young (R-AK). It got a total of 43 SIGNERS! House Appropriations Committee action, June 2014 – kept USAID TB funding at current level of $236 million Senate: Senate bilateral tuberculosis letter -- This letter asked for $400 million to support bilateral tuberculosis control. Led by Senator Brown (D-OH), it got a total of 12 SIGNERS for Tuberculosis letter: Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Mazie Hirono (D-HI) Edward Markey (D-MA), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ron Wyden (D-OR) Senate Appropriations Committee action, June 2014 – reduced USAID TB funding by $11 million to $225 million

The number of Multi-Drug Resistant TB patients enrolled in treatment nearly doubled from FY12 to FY13 in these countries. Through its contribution to the Global Drug Facility, USAID has helped lower the cost of medication for drug resistant TB by more than 25%.

Where to next?

TB Vulnerabilities in the US 100,000 people in the US were exposed to TB in 2011 – 80% were evaluated (screened by local and state health depts) – 16,000 found to have TB infection (inactive) and 6200 completed preventive therapy – 571 found to have active TB National TB Controllers Association (NTCA) survey of TB staff in 2013: TB cases are becoming more complex -- more staff time, services, and resources needed. 60% of states reported decreased budgets since % of all respondents reported decreased capacity to conduct contact investigations – can lead to unchecked transmission. ~33% had a decreased ability to provide TB preventive therapy to high-risk patients with latent TB infection.
