THE FLAG OF THE USA The flag of the USA is called “the stars and stripes”. There are 50 white stars (each one represents one state) and 13 stripes (each one represents the original 13 states founded by the colonists)

NEW YORK

HISTORY Dutch colonists bought this area from Native Americans(Indians) and called it “New Amsterdam”. British arrived and took possession of it. They changed the name and called the city “New York”. The city is divided into 5 boroughs: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island.

ELLIS ISLAND AND THE STATUE OF LIBERTY In the past 12 million immigrants arrived in New York by ship. The ships stopped at the immigration centre on Ellis Island where the immigrants were checked. This island is now a museum and a popular place reminding New Yorkers their origins.

The first thing immigrants saw was the Statue of Liberty, which stands in New York Harbour. For this reason it became a symbol of freedom and opportunity. The Statue of Liberty was made in France and transported to the USA in 1885.
