When children do not see themselves represented in an environment, it can harm their self-concept and sense of belonging. Children who are not represented may not be as readily accepted by their peers.

High-quality, culturally responsive early learning environments that support each child’s full participation are critical to closing achievement gaps

Do you find out something that inspires/ intrigues/ delights each child?

Culturally responsive interactions between personnel and young children are more likely to support progress toward children’s mastery of language, literacy, science, and math skills

4. Focus on the potential of each child instead of factors that might place that child at risk 18

Maintain high expectations and support each child in achieving them Teachers sometimes believe - either consciously or unconsciously – that their students are deficient and that their underachievement is the result of limited potential. When we talk about people having underdeveloped muscles, we say they’re out of shape. We don’t say they’re deficient... [F]ocus on the idea that the brain is like a muscle; it requires specific exercises, guided personal training, and relevant and meaningful instruction to build competence.

To support each child’s full participation, what will you do to... Engage their families? Reflect each child in your environment and materials? Build on each child’s strengths? Maintain high expectations and support each child in achieving them? You have a new group of preschool age children to work with. Several of the children qualify for free/reduced meals. Several of the children speak Spanish exclusively at home. Several of the children are from different New Mexico tribes.

Summary The more you know about your own culture, the more you will be able to support the full participation of each child and their family Culturally relevant, respectful and responsive environments, interactions, and practices support the full participation of each young learner Culturally respectful and responsive educators can make a tremendous difference for each New Mexico child and their family
