Math 120: Pre-calculus 2 Instructor: Mike Panitz

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!2 Today Reference Angles –Chapter 6.4 (4e) | Chapter 8.4 (3e) Unit Circle Approach: Trig Function Properties –Chapter 6.5 (4e) | Chapter 8.5 (3e) Graphs of Sine & Cosine Functions –Chapter 6.6 (4e) | Chapter 8.6 (3e)

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!3 Next Lecture Finish today’s material Graphs of the Remaining Trig Functions –Chapter 6.7 (4e) | Chapter 8.7 (3e) Trig. Modeling –Chapter 6.8 (4e) | Chapter 8.8 (3e)

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!4 HomeWork HW is provided to: –Make sure you get practice in thoroughly, completely, correctly working out answers to problems –Provide guidance (by example) of what sorts of questions will be on the exam, etc –Provide the instructor some feedback on how people are doing

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!5 HomeWork SHOW ALL WORK –If you use a formula, write it down –If you use a formula, define what each variable in the formula means –Plug the variables in –Do 1 math operation per line

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!6 HomeWork Ex: An angle is 3 radians, the circle is 1 foot long, what’s the arc length? –1) s = r θ –2) r = 1 foot θ = 3 –3) s = 1 * 3 s = 3 (feet)

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!7 HomeWork At the same time: there’s ~30 students, and ~10 problems/HW (or more) –  300 problems per HW assignment –This is too much to grade them all in fine-grained detail

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!8 HomeWork HW will be graded as follows: –Quick pass through for overall completion / “stuff looks right” Anything that isn’t finished / correct may result in loss of points –A couple of questions will be picked for more detailed review Questions picked are at instructor’s discretion May not be the same for all students

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!9 Exams Exams, unlike the HW, WILL be graded in detail –Partial credit will be awarded –Exam grading will be based on your ability to show your work –You’ll do some ‘practice mini-exams’ before the exam

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!10 Exam #1 You’ll be given some problems to work through, and for each problem, you’ll also get the answer. –Your grade will be dependent on your ability to fully document & explain how you get to the answer –Partial credit for ‘correct steps, wrong answer’ You’ll be allowed to bring notes on a 3”x5” card (front and back). –No other notes/books –Calculator memory will be cleared before you’re allowed to start

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2!11 Donate School Supplies! Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College had been devastated by hurricane Katrina, Please join Cascadia Student Government’s efforts to aid our fellow community college students in there time of need! We are collecting school supplies to send to Mississippi for students that have had all of there school supplies destroyed by Katrina- the book store has even volunteered to ship the supplies we collect! We are collecting new and used school supplies- EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS! Please bring school supplies to: CCC Student Government Office, the lower level Peer Resource Desk, or the Library Annex
