Scholarship of Teaching and Learning “Methodologically rigorous scholarly work conducted to enhance teaching and advance learning, ideally resulting in peer-reviewed products made public" (Society for the Teaching of Psychology, 2013). All research using human participants needs to pass the Institutional Review Board. 1.Generate an idea (anecdotal evidence) 2.Transform the idea into a research study 3.Obtain IRB approval 4.Conduct study & disseminate results Timing is important

PROTECT THE STUDENT Students used as research participants When does the IRB come into play? Research means a systematic investigation, including research development, testing, and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge. Human subject means a living individual about whom an investigator (whether professional or student) conducting research obtains Data through intervention or interaction with the individual, or Identifiable, private information

THE COMMON RULE Title 45 CFR Part 46 is based on 3 ethical principles: 1.Respect for Persons Autonomy: People have the right to decide for themselves to participate, or not, in research (Informed Consent) People who may be considered vulnerable should be provided special protections 2.Beneficence Risks must be minimized, and benefits must always outweigh the risks (Risk- Benefit Analysis) 3.Justice Those who bear the burdens of research must receive its benefits (Fair Subject Selection)

MAJOR ISSUES 1.Changing role from teacher to researcher, student to participant Avoid coercion or undue influence Distinguishing classwork from research Use of 3 rd party to collect data Questions to consider: Can you run a focus group during class? When should you collect data?

MAJOR ISSUES 2.Obtaining Informed Consent When and how consent is obtained (consent process) Signed consent forms (FERPA) Clear statement in the consent to minimize potential coercion “You are free to decline to participate in this research study, or to withdraw your participation at any point, without penalty. Your decision whether or not to participate in this research study will have no influence on (state appropriate possible consequence)” Question to consider: What are the perceived or real risks to students for participating, or not, in research conducted by their instructor?

MAJOR ISSUES 3.Protecting Anonymity Anonymous versus confidential De-identification of data Tracking participants over time Audio, photo, and video Questions to consider: When should you look at and analyze data? Can you use photographs or videos in data collection or dissemination?
