Help for Farmers ● The Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act (replaced AAA), 1936 – rewarded farmers for good farming practices. Farm Security Administration, 1937 – gave over $1 billion in loans to tenant farmers & built camps for migrant workers.

Works Progress Administration, –1943, $11 billion to create unskilled construction jobs. – airports – roads – public buildings “It was really great. You worked, you got a paycheck and you had some dignity. Even when a man raked leaves, he got paid, he had some dignity.” ■ collected slave narratives, painted murals in schools & on walls Special effort to help women, minorities, youth Eleanor Roosevelt

What About the Kids?! National Youth Administration, 1935 Provided education, jobs, counseling, and recreation to young people. – Found part-time jobs for drop-outs – to pay for new clothes & supplies

Protection of Workers National Labor Relations Act/ Wagner Act, 1935 –S–Supported union rights –P–Prohibited firing of union members Nat’l Labor Relations Board –H–Heard testimony about unfair business practices –H–Held elections for union representation Fair Labor Standards Act, 1938 –R–Reduced work week to 44 hours –S–Set Minimum wage – 25 cents (40 cents by 1945) –B–Banned hazardous work for minors

Social Security Act Old-Age Ins. 65 Years+ – employee paid ½ & employer paid ½ of retirement plan as you work. Unemployment Insurance – employees could draw from this if out of work, due to layoffs. Aid to Families w/Dependent Children and the Disabled ■ Longest lasting and largest impacting New Deal Program ■ Will it be here for us?
