ADHD & ADD The things they may not tell you about it! By: Joshua Willis

ADHD is a developmental disorder that stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is often characterized by hyperactive, impulsive, and inattentive.

Causes… No one knows for sure what causes ADHD, however doctors do know that it is the result of a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Prevalence ADHD affects about 9% of children between the ages 3-17 and about 3% of adults. It is usually diagnosed in childhood, and it is not a disorder limited to just children.

Signs & Symptoms Predominantly Inattentive Do not listen when spoken to directly. Have difficulty organizing tasks and activities. Predominantly Hyperactive Fidget with their hands or feet or squirm in their seat often. Blurt out answers before questions have been completed.

Most At Risk? The most at risk of developing this disorder are teens and kids. It is found most common among people age 3 to 17. While it is not necessarily common for adults to develop this disorder it is not unheard of, about 3% of adults get this disorder. Although no explanation of it, boys are three times more likely to develop ADHD than girls.

Prevention & Treatment ADHD can be treated by medicine such as: stimulants, nonstimulants, and antidepressants. It can also be treated by behavior therapy.
