Libraries Australia Cataloguing Parallel Session Bemal Rajapatirana / Rob Walls

Libraries Australia Cataloguing Cataloguing Client Web Cataloguing Record Import Service Non-roman scripts Database Quality MARC record supply / E-collections System Developments Standards and Data models

Cataloguing Client Save whole records (not field-by-field) Improved user configurability using standard window functions (e.g. fonts and screen colours, toolbars) Choice of command, button, or keyboard shortcut to invoke most functions Context sensitive help for each MARC21 field Templates for easy input of coded data (i.e. 006, 007, 008)

Cataloguing Client (2) Pick list menu driven data creation form for users who aren't familiar with MARC 21 Range of MARC 21 templates for experienced cataloguers Supports input/editing of non-roman script (CJKT) data using Windows Input Method Editors (IME's) and keyboard maps Some updates (e.g. MARC21 changes) can be implemented without redistributing and reinstalling the Client

Web Cataloguing Add/change/delete holdings Create simple bibliographic record Import records from external databases for copy cataloguing: – OCLC/RLG – Singapore NUC – Te Puna – 3 CJK Databases

Record Import Service Used by 50 libraries which contribute over 1M bibliographic records and 2M holdings per year Range of formats supported Most files are processed within 2 days of receipt Data quality is important

Non-roman scripts Thai Cyrillic, Greek, Tamil Automatic transliteration Keyword indexing Supply to NBD via RIS in Unicode Receive in RES Unicode products

Database Management

Database Quality Improved matching and merging and continuing refinement Retrospective de-duplication of NBD records Important new contributors Improved coverage of public library holdings Timely contribution of data is important

Minimum record standard One name or uniform title heading if applicable Title proper Statement of responsibility Publication details Imprint Leader: Type of record, Bibliographic level, Encoding level 008 codes: Date of publication, Date 1, Country of publication For non-Roman script data the 245 field (Title) is mandatory nimum

Duplicate detection Identify potential duplicates Title acronym (4:2:2:1) ANBD numbers LC numbers ISBN, ISSN Local System numbers

Evaluation Tri-gram analyses Calculation of similarity values More accurate matching Configurable matching Overall similarity value: 0.90  duplicate  0.60 new record 0.60 – 0.90 possible duplicate (human review)

Merging If a tag is only in either the database or incoming record it is retained Where tags occur in both records merging is based on the source of the record, encoding level and the presence of non-roman script.

MARC record supply Record Export Service (RES) – File pick-up via website or ftp – Unicode or MARC 8 New Z39.50 products option – Products or MARC 21 format – Unicode or MARC 8 Products self-service

E-collections Australian e-collections Aggregator neutral records Serials Solutions agreement Investigate other sources of e-resource data EAG on E-resource guidelines Addition of URLs for resources in major digitisation projects (e.g. million book project)

Standards and data models FRBR based clustering in LA Search OCLC work set algorithm xISBN Persistent identifiers for ANBD records RDA – FRBR – GMD/SMD – Carrier/Content

System Developments CBS 3.2 Automatic transliteration Single login for web cataloguing CJK keyword indexing Import records from external databases Display of search query on brief results display

System Developments (2) Updated cataloguing client in 2007 Pilot contribution of authority data via RIS Interfaces to enable NBD staff to manage many system functions: – Global changes – Match/merge configuration – Offline de-duplication – Record linking

Under consideration Implement an URL checking service Automated transliteration of other scripts (e.g. Japanese, Korean, Thai) SRU update
