It’s All About Victory Romans 7:1-25

It’s all about Victory We Know What Sin Is Romans 7:7-12

Paul was teaching that if we follow the flesh then we will reap sin, and if we follow righteousness, then we will reap holiness.

As we enter into chapter seven we will see that the reason we sin is because we are sinners. We expect after we are saved that our lives will work better and not to worry, but let me remind you of the 4-D’s Death Divorce Dysfunctional Disease

V7. The Law and Sin 7What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 7

Some would say that because of the law man sinned and we would be better off if there were no law. On the contrary God revealed sin using the Law to show us that we are and always will be sinners to the day we are fully redeemed.

Paul wanted his readers to realize that the Law did not invent sin. The human race has been cursed by sin since the garden experience. Genesis 4:7 warns Cain of sin’s desire to have him. Sin was around long before the Law was every given by God.

V7b I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” The law’s purpose was to call sin, sin a hard thing for Christians to do today. What are new names for sin today?

V 8 But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. 8

It’s as when we became aware that sin is being called sin we seem to be tempted more to do wrong. Genesis 3:1 Did God really say for you not to eat from any tree in the Garden? What is wrong with this verse? Genesis 2:16-17

What really is “legalism”? It is the belief that I can become holy and please God by obeying laws. It is measuring spirituality by a list of dos and don’ts that truly temps the believers.

The Law reveals the exceeding sinfulness of sin. The Law is not at fault, but the old Adamic nature is the culprit. McGee, J. V. (1991).

V9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. Paul shows that the offence of the Law proves that we are sinners and rebellious towards God. [Rom. 7:9]. The Law is a ministry of condemnation. The Law can do nothing but condemn us. McGee, J. V. (1991).

[Rom. 7:9]. The Law is a ministry of condemnation. The Law can do nothing but condemn us. McGee, J. V. (1991).

The law’s intent was to bring life yet it’s result is Death. The Law set the boundaries but yet it did not have a remedy for sin. V10 The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me.

Oh, the tragedy of the person who seeks to live by the Law! It does not lead him to life. While it is true that God had said, “This do and thou shalt live” (see Deut. 8:1), the doing of it was the difficulty. The fault was not in the Law, but in the one who thought the Law would bring life an power. McGee, J. V. (1991).

V11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.

Sin is personified again here and is a tempter. Sin tempts every man outside the Garden of Eden relative to himself and God. In the Garden of Eden Satan made man believe that God could not be trusted and that man was able to become god, apart from God. McGee, J. V. (1991).

V12 So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. The Law shows the Holiness of God as Just and Good. Paul makes it clear that the Law show man that we truly need a Savior to rescue us from the consequence of the sin we commit.

The problem is a human problem. Man is the “x” in the equation of life. He is the uncertain one, the one who cannot be trusted. McGee, J. V. (1991).
