Vol No 1234Springfield Edition. Friday 16 th September Cents LOCAL BOY KIDNAPPED THREE SUSPECTS DETAINED AS SEARCH FOR SPRINGFIELD’S LOVABLE ROGUE BART SIMPSONS ENTERS IT’S THIRD DAY The Simpsons Speak Out Last night the Simpson family finally spoke out about the kidnap of their ten year old son Bart. “I just can’t believe someone would do this.” said his mother, Marge “He is such a lovable little boy.” Bart was kidnapped from his home on Sunday morning. Until now his disappearance is a mystery and the only evidence of his location is a roughly scribbled “I can’t think who would do such a thing” says Marge Simpson Chief Wiggum also revealed that he was about to engage the finest scientific brains in the search for Bart and that he had every faith in the chemists from Habergham High School who are now looking into the case using a scientific technique known as chromatography. School Chemists Asked For Help “Chromatography is the key to this case” ransom note which was found at the scene along with his broken skateboard. When asked if he had any leads Chief Clancy Wiggum was reluctant to comment until he received a box of jelly doughnuts. He then revealed that three suspects had been arrested on suspicion of kidnap. This paper can now report that the suspects are Principle Skinnner, Bart’s teacher at Springfield High School, Moe Szyslak, Owner of “Moe’s Tavern” and Mr Ned Flanders, the Simpson’s next door neighbour. Each suspect had a pen which matched the colour used in the ransom note.

Special Investigator Chief Wiggum Needs You A ransom note was left at the scene. As a scientific expert we need you to test the ink from the note and pens recovered from the three main suspects to prove who wrote it. This can be done with ____________. A __________ which can be used for __________ the different coloured __________ in an ink __________ using a suitable ________. technique dyes separating solvent mixturechromatography

XABC Filter paper Ink spots from suspect’s pens Pencil Line 1.5 cm 2cm Ink spot from ransom note Staple Water 1cm deep Petri Dish Chromatography Investigation (Who has kidnapped Bart?) 1.You have been given a sheet of chromatography (filter) paper. Put your name at the top in pencil. 2.The paper has a reference line and one dot of ink from the ransom note on it already. Using the 3 suspect pens (A,B and C), make 3 more dots of the same size 2cm apart on the line. Remember to put labels below the spots in pencil. 3.Roll your paper into a loose tube where the edges are just touching and fix with a staple at each end. 4.In a Petri dish add 1cm of water and place your tube into the middle, not touching the sides of the dish. 5.When the water reaches the top staple, take your tube out and leave to dry. 6.Once dry, carefully unroll and examine to discover who wrote the note.
