K EEPING THE H UMAN IN H UMAN R ESOURCES A FEW THOUGHTS ON T ALENT M ANAGEMENT Dr. Jim Goes University of Oregon and Walden University (US) Fulbright Scholar, University of Pune (PUMBA) 22 February 2013

The key questions about talent are… How can it be identified? How can it be cultivated effectively? How can be harvested when you need it? How can talent provide the basis for competitive advantage in the organization?

What are the Skills and Capabilities that are needed in Global Competition? Initiative and innovation (“self starter”) Problem Solving – unstructured problems Critical thinking – a willingness to challenge, to look at situations differently (strategize) Teamwork, regardless of the context Knowledge and skills are important, but intelligent application of these is critical -- fitting knowledge and skills to the context

Talent, Capabilities, and Resources: Building Blocks of Competitive Advantage Skills Knowledge Experiences IndividualsTeamOrganization Talent CapabilitiesResources Teamwork Problem Solving Solutions Routines Systems Intellectual Property

What is Core Competence, really? Provides potential access to a wide variety of markets and products Makes a significant contribution to perceived customer benefits of the end product Is difficult for competitors to imitate

The Evolution of Honda: A Strategy Based on Capabilities and Resources Founding of Honda motor company 50cc 2-cycle engine 4 cycle engines 405cc motor cycle Related products: ground tillers, marine engines, generators, pumps, chainsaws First product: clip-on engine for bicycles The 50cc super -cub N360 mini car 1000cc Goldwing touring motor cycle Acura Car division Insight Hybrid

The Influence of Social Media on Talent Talent increasingly flows globally Social media makes this more friction free Skills and experiences require deep experience and global perspective Firms must compete for the best talent in a wider marketplace Simply being knowledgeable does not mean you have marketable talent

Implications Keep the Human in Human Resources – Don’t homogenize out differences – Help students develop focus and competitive advantage in their talent Teach not just knowledge, but application – Critical thinking, entrepreneurial mindset, a willingness to experiment, a global orientation Talent is a basis of Core Competence – The key is to connect individual talent to team performance, thereby enhancing capabilities and resources that create and sustain competitive advantage in products and services
