Predictive Comparison of Depression and Loneliness Across Multiple Models. ????? ??????? Depression and loneliness are related to one another, but in similar multiple regression models and path analyses we see distinct differences between the two. Minor relationships become more apparent in these bigger models. Using all of the same predictors we explore the similarities and differences between these two related criterion variables as well as a time line comparison of when each variable manifests itself, and how each predictor relates to each other. High stress is predictive of depression and not loneliness (Tables 3 & 4). Age is predictive of loneliness and not depression (Tables 3 & 4). Total social support is directly affected by males over females, lower age, and married people (Table 1 & 2) which all indirectly affect depression (Table 1). State anxiety is directly affected by high stress (Table 1 & 2). Trait anxiety is directly affected by high stress and single people which indirectly affects depression (Table 1 & 2). Lower total social support, high stress, and high trait anxiety directly affect depression (Table 1). The effect of low total social support was greater for loneliness than for depression. High stress had a direct effect on depression. Higher age had a direct effect on loneliness. We see the biggest differences between the criteria in the direct effects of high stress for only depression and higher age for only loneliness, and in the difference in the size difference in the relationship of total social support with loneliness being much lower than depression. BACKGROUND PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS MATERIALS AND METHODS RESULT S CONCLUSIONS References Depression and loneliness are related and that seems intuitive. Those who are depressed may be lonely and those who are lonely be depressed. Other factors such as stress, gender, marital status, social support, and anxiety change each others relationships with depression and loneliness. In this project the goal was to take those differences and trim down the fat to see what really predicted what. Mostly likely the reduced version of the these models with be no different from the full ones, and can tell more about what variables are truly predictive of depression and loneliness. A secondary analysis was done using a self-report data set. Data was collected from five Midwestern Community Colleges and Universities with questionnaires given during Introductory Psychology courses. 600 questionnaires were issued and around 400 were completed and sent back. Only two marriage statuses out of possible 5 choices (single and married) were used, this made total population used 363. Two analyses were done to compare the depression and loneliness criteria.
