Statistics Final Project Emily Ishii Statistics Period 1

Introduction Surveyed the students, surrounding the topic of pets. I focused on five types of pets: dog, cat, bird, rodent, and fish. Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, all were surveyed because I wanted a variety of age difference. I personally spend a lot of time with my dog. I was curious to see who else may spend the equal amount of time with their pets.

Survey I’d replace a fill in the blank years to specific time frames. Add reptiles as a pet option. Eliminate the “other” option.

Claims 70% of Bishop Montgomery students own dogs. More females spend minutes with their pets everyday compared to males. Males don’t clean after their pets as much as females do.

Claim # 1 57 out of 82 students owned pets. 70% of Bishop Montgomery students own dogs.

Testing Claim# 1 70% of Bishop Montgomery students own dogs. H o : p =.7 claim H a : p ≠.7 = 1-PropZTest P 0 :.7 X: 43 N: 57 P=.370 P vs ɑ.370 >.05 Fail to Reject There is not enough evidence to reject the claim that 70% of Bishop Montgomery students own dogs.

Claim # 2 More females spend 0-15 minutes with their pets everyday compared to males.

Testing Claim # 2 More females spend 0-15 minutes with their pets everyday compared to males. H o : p 1 < p 2 H a : p 1 > p 2 claim = 2-PropTest X 1 : 11 N 1 : 35 X 2 : 11 N 2 : 24 P=.869 P vs ɑ.869 >.05 Fail to reject There is not enough evidence to support the claim that more females spend 0-15 minutes with their pets everyday compared to males.

Claim # 3 Males don’t clean after their pets as much as females do.

Testing Claim # 3 H o : p 1 > p 2 H a : p 1 < p 2 claim Males don’t clean after their pets as much as females do. = 2-PropTest X 1 : 22 N 1 : 35 X 2 : 17 N 2 : 24 P= >.05 P vs ɑ Fail to reject There is not enough evidence to support the claim that males don’t clean after their pets as much as females do.

What I’d do Differently… Data Collection  Pass out more surveys for more accurate results.  Survey adults to see if they take better care of their pets compared to students.  Have more specific time selections on the survey instead of the “other” option.  Ask if they daily feed their pets or if someone else feeds the pet. Also ask if the pet is the family’s pet or the students’.

Conclusion  All my claims were disproven.  While writing the claims, I thought it would be obvious that females take better care of their pets than males would.  I was definitely shocked about the results, but then again I would survey more students for more accurate result.
