California’s Common Core Content Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects

Essential Question What can be uncovered by tracing standards and unpacking assessments to help us re-imagine ELA/Literacy instruction in the Common Core? We will respond to this by: * Exercising the 4 Cs (communicate, collaborate, create, critically think) * Tracing ELA standards * Unpacking content & language demands of sample assessment items * Establishing key points for a "common message" in ELA to share with district, site, and classroom leaders 2

Building Background: Portrait of a Proficient Student They demonstrate independence. They build strong content knowledge. They respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose and discipline. They comprehend as well as critique. They value evidence. They use technology and digital media strategically and capably. They come to understand other perspectives and cultures. Source: ELA CCSS Introduction;
