Understanding the New Translation of the Mass and Calling the Church Deeper into the Mystery We Celebrate Rev. Patrick J. Beidelman, STL Director of Liturgy Archdiocese of Indianapolis

Understanding the new translation of the Mass… Implementation: November 26 & 27, 2011 First Sunday of Advent New ‘Books’ begin arriving: October 1, 2011 May begin using new sung parts of Mass: Beginning in September

Understanding the new translation of the Mass… Dream big on this one!

Understanding the new translation of the Mass… Leadership in a time of change: –Give good information –Listen –Name/clarify the moment

Understanding the new translation of the Mass… Why is this happening? Because two popes looked at the various translations around the world for a number of years, and they thought that the translations could be done better. (specifically, some content was missing and some of the prayers were skewed)

Calling the Church deeper into the mystery we celebrate Let’s give our energy to two things… 20% Praying with some new words at Mass 80% FORMATION: Deeper understanding of the Mass

Calling the Church deeper into the mystery we celebrate Praying with some new words means: –Obtaining new books –Providing ‘helps’ for the assembly –Taking time to practice –Going slow/praying deliberately –Being patient and positive

Calling the Church deeper into the mystery we celebrate Providing formation includes: –‘Catholic’ identity –Key issues History-Roman Missal Language Translation –Meaning of the Mass Deeper understanding Fuller participation Richer experience of God’s grace and mercy

Understanding the new translation of the Mass… Publication timeline 1969-present: (Latin) MissaleUSA Missal edition published published first second third

Calling the Church deeper into the mystery we celebrate Greeting: PRESENT TEXT Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. NEW TRANSLATION Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit.

Ecce Agnus Dei Present text: Priest: This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. All: Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. New translation: Priest: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Calling the Church deeper into the mystery we celebrate From The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8 th …

Calling the Church deeper into the mystery we celebrate Present translation: Opening Prayer Father, You prepared the Virgin Mary to be the worthy mother of your son. You let her share beforehand in the salvation Christ would bring by his death, and kept her sinless from the first moment of her conception. Help us by her prayers to live in your presence without sin. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. New translation: Collect O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin prepared a worthy dwelling for your Son, grant, we pray, that, as you preserved her from every stain by virtue of the Death of your Son, which you foresaw, so, through her intercession, we, too, may be cleansed and admitted to your presence. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Calling the Church deeper into the mystery we celebrate Challenges… –We already have enough on our plates –You’re changing the words I just learned! –Youngest children can’t read yet –Comprehension

Calling the Church deeper into the mystery we celebrate Opportunities… –Cultivate of love for and deeper connection to the Mass –‘Singing the Mass’ not just singing during Mass –Praying in a more unified ‘voice’ –Liturgy is the ‘privileged place’ of catechesis –HOLINESS!

Calling the Church deeper into the mystery we celebrate What should you do now? –Be ‘formed’ yourself –Turn on the ‘Light’ for your catechists, teachers, and staff –Make a decision about a focus and direction for the people you serve

Understanding the New Translation of the Mass and Calling the Church Deeper into the Mystery We Celebrate This is a moment of extraordinary potential for liturgical renewal in our faith family! This will get us off of “auto pilot”! “The Universal Call to Holiness” in Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium 39: Therefore in the Church, everyone whether belonging to the hierarchy, or being cared for by it, is called to holiness…
