SUMMER 2015 INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES

SUMMER 2015 INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. -Robert Frost And what about you, will you choose the road less traveled by?

STAFF INTRODUCTIONS Kimberly Connelly Director of International Programs Stacie Rader Office Manager Zachary Rogers Education Abroad Advisor

M1 SUMMER INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE 2015 The M1 summer experience is typically an individualized experience created by the student with support and guidance from OIP. Factors to consider when exploring an M1 International Educational Experience: – What do I want to research? (We encourage you to talk with your academic advisors/faculty regarding your research/academic area of interest). – Where would I like to go? – What parts of the world am I interested in -- either because of the culture, the health care system, or the language? – How much do I want to be challenged culturally/linguistically? Do I or anyone in my academic community have connections to a location? Do I have the finances to support the experience? If not, where can I find financing? – Apply for a Clendening Scholarship? Apply for an OIP Scholarship ($250- $500)

WHAT OIP OFFERS YOU Individualized Advising for all International Health Elective Opportunities for all students – for credit and not-for-credit Communication between locations and students Advising of VISA applications when needed Pre-departure preparation for culture and health and safety of all students participating in an IEE. Collection of all paperwork – passport, itinerary, Waiver, Emergency Contact, STEP enrollment, etc

QUOTES FROM SUMMER 2014 PARTICIPANTS How will your international experience impact your future clinical work? “It’s important to consider other perspectives when working with patients, especially if they come from a different background, whether that be socioeconomic, cultural or ethnic differences. It is important to act as a culturally competent physician and recognize that my patients will not all be coming to me from the same perspective and might have different ideas or approaches to their health than I may have, and I need to respect those differences,” Erin Atwood, M1, Peru ‘14 How did this experience change you (your views, ideas, perceptions and biases)? “I became more aware of my personal flaws and am now working towards changing them,” Tequilla, M1, Costa Rica ‘14
